... to not buy a whole pack of sanitary towels for this?

Had my 36 week appt with the MW earlier this week and she said that if my waters went to put a sanitary towel on so they could check the fluid, but not to use an 'Always' pad as they were too absorbent.

Well, as a Mooncup girl I don't have many sanitary towels in the house, just a few 'Always' that I keep for guests who get caught short (yes, I am that considerate). Post partum I was going to use maternity pads, then switch to reusable sanitary towels.

So am I being unreasonable to not want to go and buy an entire pack of STs just for the one I'll need when my waters break and also - why is it bad that 'Always' are so absorbent? Are they that much better as a brand that any other brand ST would be better? Is there a recommended towel for one's broken waters?

I should have asked the MW all this, I know, but I was tired and a bit dazed by the stream of information and missed my opportunity to ask, so I'm hoping, as I am now full term and likely to experience this fairly soon, that there is a well informed MNer who can help...

Mine went right at the end, by the way. In the pool, I was pushing.

I was already in the hospital when they wanted to check my waters and they gave me a maternity pad, there wasn't any problem with using it to check.

Good god, buy some cheap sanitary towels. It's not a huge amount of money you're taking a gamble on. Worst case scenario is you waste £1 because you didn't need to use them, but I'm sure they could be used for some craft activity or makeshift home insulation purpose so all is not lost.

Mine went at the start of labour, 10pm at night. I heard and felt one 'pop' and stood up to walk five yards to the loo.

I soaked my mat pad, my underwear, my trousers, socks and shoes and still had to mop up after myself.

20 minutes later, there was a second pop... that was the other half. Floods, both times.

I'll spare you the in-labour/post-labour horror stories!

Buy the towels. Then buy twice as many again. You WILL need them

Sorry I haven't read every post but, I never put a pad on when my waters went. I hovered over a towel leaning on the kitchen counter and more came out with each ctx.
Except for DS2 when my waters didn't go anyway as he was an undiagnosed breech and we went in for an emc-s.

I've never 'trickled' Xmas Blush

I must be the only person who doesn't know what a mooncup is...I must google it....I would use a maternity pad for the waters breaking.

BeattieBow · 22/12/2011 11:29

my waters only broke once before labour began in all of my 5 labours. So you may not even need them anyway.

I would stick with the maternity pads.

re: the rotting car seat thing - I think it's because amniotic fluid contains proteins, much like milk, and you know how stinky milk goes when it's soaked into something and goes 'off'... imagine that on your car seat

And I was planning on using the re-usables for when the bleeding has tailed off a bit... I'm not too precious, I'll do what needs doing, but was genuinely mystified by why I couldn;t use 'Always'!

As a PP mentioned use the tecos Value ones. They're great & you will need some for when your lochia is scant - maternity pads will feel like a brick in your panties.

I hate Always - makes my fanny itch like mad & the wings stick to my skin.

corlan · 22/12/2011 14:56

I remember waddling around with a bath towel stuck down my trousers when my waters broke! ( or is that being overly competitive!)

hiddenhome · 22/12/2011 14:58

Just pop a litre jug up there in place of the mooncup Grin

Yankeecandlequeen · 22/12/2011 14:59

bath towel?!?! Blimey! lol! My waters broke with DD2 in the back of the car. I was more worried if it contained meconium as I saw the colour of that with DD1 - didn't want it staining the seat and it was 2am & DH refused to stop the car for me to check.

Oh & when I arrived int he hospital after the waters broke in the car I wanted a piss so decided to do in the lift as my pants were soaking anyhow! Well I think I pissed myself......I left a puddle in the lift.

As someone who's waters broke early with ds2 3 and 4 and with ds3 and 4 the waters continued to build up and break every day for a week I can honestly say allways were crap anyway, the only thing that stopped me leaking on to my clothes (some of the time ) was maternity pads
