To go into the hospital and demand they sort this out now?

DH went into hospital at midnight on Sunday having broken his hip in a fall...he is still lyng there now and has repeatedly been bumped off the list for surgery.

This is his 4th night now and he is in pain...not only his hip but his back and neck....he's been lying still for 3 days and 3 nights....in the same position. I have just accepted it every time they had to take him off the list as I know they are stretched and have smetimes to decide another case is more desperate...but in my opinion after three days HE is more important.

Tomorrow is day 4....and if they dont garantee that he is donein the morning I and he are tempted to remove him and have him wait at home...he is very down...and I want to go to the to the press too. WHat can do? I feel so devestated.

Hi there, So sorry to hear of the awful time your DH is having. When you speak to PALS and the ward staff tomorrow it might not hurt to let them know that you are aware of the most recent NICE guidance (launched in 2011) which states that (as people have already pointed out) that repair should take place on the day of, or the day after admission. This is a link to where you can download the quick reference guide: NICE guidance

sashh · 22/12/2011 02:38

in my experience an e-mail tot he chief exec / CEOs secretery gets things moving.

Maybe he needs to be transferred to a different surgeon

BandOMothers · 22/12/2011 10:44

The manager rang me at 8 this morning and has told me the surgeon has given his personal word thhat DH will be done today and that he will call me at midday to speakk to me...they are all very sorry....the manager was very good....dh will be home on Christmas eve all being well.

PeaceofCakeAndGoodWineToAllMN · 22/12/2011 12:11

Keeping my fingers crossed that all is going well for you both. Smile

t0lk13n · 22/12/2011 12:12

I hope you have good news and that he is in theatre as I type x

Dozer · 22/12/2011 12:15

Hope all goes well and he has a good recovery.

YonderRevoltingPeasantWhoIsHe · 22/12/2011 12:32

Yes Band really hope things are going well. I know you will have other things on your mind right now but do update when you can and let us know how your DH is.

Also, as someone who has had several ops + attendant delays/ frustrations recently, can I just say..... when they operate they generally do a good job, so after your horrible wait it is likely that your DH will be well mended and on the road to recovery. A nice Christmas present Xmas Smile

bumpybecky · 22/12/2011 12:33

I do hope he's having his op today and that he has a very good recovery.

NinkyNonker · 22/12/2011 12:48

Keeping fingers and toes crossed for you.

BandOMothers · 22/12/2011 15:24

Thanks everyone...he is in! He went in about half an hour ago and the consultant rang me at midday to apologise and assure me that no matter what e wold be done today. I called PALS this morning and they were Crap with a capital C. Compared to the lovely Sister who helped me yesterday and as far as I can see got things moving, they were awful.

The consultant told me DH will be walking ths evening or tomorrow morning at the latest and home later tomorrow as they want the bed as he's young and fit...and he wants to be home for Christmass.

DH is very happy and had much more care this morning. It really helped me coming here...such nice people here and such good advice. Thank you all! Xmas Grin

fantastic!

MOSagain · 22/12/2011 15:53

unbelievable! I know the NHS is stretched but to leave him waiting that long really is unacceptable. Like Hiddenhome, I was worried about the risk of DVT having seen how long he was immobile. Presumably they must have been giving him some anti-coagalants (sp?) to prevent a DVT? Good to see he is finally having the surgery and hope he recovers well.

BandOMothers · 22/12/2011 15:56

god knows what they gave him Mo my friend sad he should sue and she's an ICU nurse who has worked in the hospital in question but I know DH wont do that...he's just happy to be ok and to be able to walk soon. As long as there s no lasting damage then fine.

Band

What fantastic news ! I am so pleased for you.

Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas ! Xmas Smile

AnyoneforTurps · 22/12/2011 16:00

Great news but please do write to the Chief Exec to complain. Many people with hip fractures are elderly and often have no one to fight for them. It is disgraceful that they are left untreated while elective non-urgent surgery carries on. The only way this will change is if people make a fuss.

In the meantime, well done for fighting for your DH - hope he recovers quickly. Xmas Smile

KinkyDoritoWithFairyLightsOn · 22/12/2011 16:07

I'm so pleased that you managed to get it sorted out. Being stuck in the hospital system can make you feel very powerless and it's really tough.

I hope you all have a really lovely Christmas Xmas Smile.

valiumredhead · 22/12/2011 16:11

I had the same - broke ankle in 4 places on the Weds and had to wait til the weekend for the op to pin it back together again - it was truly hell on earth and I feel for your dh Sad What made it worse was I was so dehydrated as I kept having to starve as each day they said today might be the day so don't eat/drink anything. Just awful.

I hope he recovers well.

danceswithyarn · 22/12/2011 16:18

It's not good enough, and fails the "Mum test" (if it's not good enough for my mum it's not good enough for my patients)

YANBU for your only concern to be about your DH and to push for his treatment.

But without knowing what else the trauma team in your hospital have admitted in the last 3 days; it's impossible to tell if they are prioritising appropriately. As someone has said, open breaks are bumped up, but so are ones where nerves etc are at risk, joint infections, and often children's fractures (depends on your unit)

Also need to know if it's a straightforward break or if a particular specialist is needed (are they fixing or replacing; total or hemi?) and if he has any other medical problems that need investigation or treatment before he has an anaesthetic, or if any medication needs to be worked out of his system (like warfarin or clopidogrel - most places press on regardless of these, but not all)

So YANBU, but I don't know if they are - I suspect they're doing their damndest to treat everyone with limited theatre time and resources available.

danceswithyarn · 22/12/2011 16:19

vallium ankles are the most often delayed ime. Swelling issues can make it a week or more before it's safe to fix them sometimes. We can only try.

valiumredhead · 22/12/2011 16:50

dances it was because there was a very bad RTA accident at the same time so everything was delayed. But yes, the swelling also delayed things.

Liluri · 22/12/2011 17:55

Good news - well done for fighting his corner Smile
