To be sad that Lego have launched a "girls' range"

One of the last bastions of gender-neutral toys - is it just me who finds this depressing? Here

I had a cafe it was great!

I really do think that Lego should take note of this thread and make it much easier to buy girl's lego. My dd was thrilled to get a box of doors and windows as part of her birthday present, she's been building houses ever since.

To be fair to Lego though, the pieces that they play the most with are those that belonged to me when I was a child lots of space Lego that doesn't seem to be made anymore!

GreatBallsOfFluff · 19/12/2011 20:59

Was it this type of set OtterBaubles hereas I had this when I was younger along with stables etc and thought that it was 'girly' rather than gender-neutral due to the pinks and pastel colours

DisTwinkleyMincePies · 19/12/2011 21:00

Whoops, posted too soon. I meant to say that my problem with Belville is that so many of the pieces are specific and not easily reused in other contexts.

I have the kitchen to your cafe (winks at one upmanship and drives off in my pull back porsche style lego car)

Xmas Grin
Valpollicella · 19/12/2011 21:03

As an aside, DS now draws all women with the booby curve that lady Lego figurines have

Hmm Grin
LynetteScavo · 19/12/2011 21:03

Oh, I had that kitchen! I loved it!!!

If I were a little girl today, I wouldn't want Ninjago (or what ever!) I would want a cafe! It looks really fun. What I don't like is that it's described as a girls range. There are probably boys who would like to play with the cafe. DS2 shares my fondness for building houses.

FizzyMoonDust · 19/12/2011 21:04

I had that kitchen as well!

IneedAChristmasNickname · 19/12/2011 21:05

I had (in fact still have Blush ) Lego Fabuland. That was girly! I agree though that lego city, and Harry Potter ranges are gender neutral.

whackamole · 19/12/2011 21:06

I used to love lego when I was a child! Me and my sister used to make all manner of different houses - my brother, and now my DSS make cars and like the themed sets.

I didn't realise there were girls and boys themed sets!

DisTwinkleyMincePies · 19/12/2011 21:06

One of my friends is mad with too much time on his hands a lego enthusiast, he recently built a cinema with pizza restaurant upstairs. It was amazing!

exexpat · 19/12/2011 21:07

They've had Belleville stuff for ages - we have loads. We also have a lot of pink Duplo princess/castle stuff - DD went through a very pink/sparkly/princess phase from about age 2-4.

She is now 9 and resolutely ungirly, and loves Lego - top of her birthday list was a load of the Ninjago stuff, and she would also be delighted with any of the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter or other ranges (which I would see as gender-neutral). As would her best friend. But she does still play with some of the Belleville pieces sometimes, combined with all the other crates of lego she has acquired from her brother.

I'm absolutely not a fan of the 'if it's for girls, it must be pink' mindset, but I can see why Lego does do some stuff like that, and if it acts as an introduction to Lego for girls who then get into the more mainstream Lego sets.

bruffin · 19/12/2011 21:08

The belville range was aimed at very young girls. The selection for dd who is now 14 was dire except harry potter, but the scaled the range back.
I complained to lego and they replied they were bringing out the houses.

Takver · 19/12/2011 21:08

"Lego isn't gender neutral though. How many girls are into pirates, Star Wars and Indiana Jones? "

Erm, absolutely tons of them . . .

(well, maybe not Indiana Jones, for some reason that seems to have dated more than Star Wars, haven't met any little boys into Indiana Jones either)

But pirate and Death Star mania isn't gender linked IME!

MatureUniStudent · 19/12/2011 21:09

Hauled myself off the sofa and made the effort to walk upstairs and push the carefully filed child toys (crap stashed) from the front of the spare bed, to have a look in the lego box. My kitchen cupboard fronts, some of them, are red. Have I stumbled across an Ebay treasure?

I also have brown horses with a lego saddle that have definately seen better days. Also, I remember a very Queen Style lego handbag that clipped into a gloved hand of the lego lady with a removeable hat? - in white, that would have made Jackie Kennedy jealous - anyone else?

Takver · 19/12/2011 21:09

God, that girl stuff linked to looks hideous though.

tralalala · 19/12/2011 21:10

I just wish even in the sets geared at boys that there were more female figures. My DS has asked why in 'toy land' (by which he means lego and playmobil) there are no ladies.

DumSpiroSperHoHoHo · 19/12/2011 21:10

I think it's a great idea in theory, but agree that it would be better to have 'standard' figures so they fit in across the whole range of Lego.

DD had Apple Tree Cottage for Christmas last year and has been eyeing up the passenger plane for months in spite of being a very pink, glittery girly girl for the most part.

I, on the other hand, may not be responsible for my actions in the Lego store when the Hobbit/Lord Of The Rings range comes out next year! Blush Grin

DumSpiroSperHoHoHo · 19/12/2011 21:12

The Camper Van is great & you can get some unusual/girl figures on eBay but it can cost a fair bit.

IneedAChristmasNickname · 19/12/2011 21:15

tralalala playmobil does have ladies. DS2 got the playground for his bday.It came with a couple of ladies, and what looks suspiciously like bottles of wine Grin, and he has a lollypop lady, actually loads of playmobil ladies!

I'm also sure we had lego 'ladies' ie they had long hair, when I was small

ChippyMinton · 19/12/2011 21:17

I still have my lego kitchen - I'll show DD that link and have a go at recreating it. Pretty sure I had a bathroom too -those flat tiles were amazing.

We have a houseful of Lego, and it's mainly the boys that play with it. Last Xmas DD went through the pick-a-brick section of the website and ordered a load of girly stuff - pink bricks, interesting windows, wine glasses, food etc - which she's very possessive about.
