to think this was odd pavement etiquette?

Walking in to work this morning I saw a young man approaching from the opposite direction. We were on a stretch of pavement that was quite adequately wide enough for two people to pass without either one having to step in to the road. When I spotted him we were both walking in the centre of the pavement but while he was still several metres away I changed course so that I was walking further to my right, thus leaving more than enough room for him to pass to my left.

However, he continued in the centre of the pavement and when I was almost up to him he stopped dead and just stood there right in the middle of the pavement. I could still get past him but I had to turn slightly sideways to squeeze between him and the wall to my right. Once I had past him he then continued on his way down the centre of the pavement.

Now he would only have had to move a foot or two to his right and we could both have passed each other easily. AIBU for thinking that was a really odd way to behave? Just in case anyone is wondering - no I am not enormously fat! Nor was he. And I wasn't pushing a double buggy or carrying anything that made me in any way awkward to maneouvre around. Although some of the pavements were icy this morning that particular stretch was completely clear so it is not as if he would have had to step in the slush or ice to avoid me.

It is a little odd. Maybe he was a million miles away?

TheMaskedPan · 19/12/2011 09:32

is it really quiet where you work?

SnapesMistressofMerriment · 19/12/2011 10:31

That is strange, maybe he was stoned. Weed really messes with your perception of space.

CarefullyAirbrushedPotato · 19/12/2011 10:34

I too was wondering if he was off his face intoxicated

Nah, king-of-the-road type, trying to intimidate you. I bet he's one of those men who sits on public transport with his knees w-i-d-e apart to accommodate his 'enormous' bollocks.

Next time do a really screechy loud sneeze just as you're passing.

TotemPole · 19/12/2011 11:10

There could a non-obvious reason why he found it difficult to move.

If you bump into him again, stop in front of him and see what happens.

OldGreyWassailTest · 19/12/2011 12:11

Maybe he had mental health issues, maybe Aspergers, maybe OCD and was counting paving stones. Whatever!

SantaAteAllTheBiscuits · 19/12/2011 12:36

stoned.

I've done this myself back in the day... public places are a disaster when you're toasted.
