Walking in to work this morning I saw a young man approaching from the opposite direction. We were on a stretch of pavement that was quite adequately wide enough for two people to pass without either one having to step in to the road. When I spotted him we were both walking in the centre of the pavement but while he was still several metres away I changed course so that I was walking further to my right, thus leaving more than enough room for him to pass to my left.
However, he continued in the centre of the pavement and when I was almost up to him he stopped dead and just stood there right in the middle of the pavement. I could still get past him but I had to turn slightly sideways to squeeze between him and the wall to my right. Once I had past him he then continued on his way down the centre of the pavement.
Now he would only have had to move a foot or two to his right and we could both have passed each other easily. AIBU for thinking that was a really odd way to behave? Just in case anyone is wondering - no I am not enormously fat! Nor was he. And I wasn't pushing a double buggy or carrying anything that made me in any way awkward to maneouvre around. Although some of the pavements were icy this morning that particular stretch was completely clear so it is not as if he would have had to step in the slush or ice to avoid me.
