workshy · 18/12/2011 21:12

hated wearing specs when I was little -think plastic NHS frames

had laser eye surgery at 19

I'm now 33 and have to wear specs again and hate it!

is it just me that doesn't like wearing them?

I wear my contacts all the time. Panic sets in on the rare occasion I get an eye infection in case I might have to leave the house wearing my glasses.
You are not alone.

FabbyChic · 18/12/2011 21:14

Ive worn glasses since I was 14. I love em cover a multitude of sins not least my bags that I have had for 24 years, even if I could I'd never wear contacts.

FabbyChic · 18/12/2011 21:14

I feel undressed without my glasses.

Beamur · 18/12/2011 21:15

Even with nice glasses I still manage to look like Olive from 'On the buses'.

cheesesarnie · 18/12/2011 21:15

im supposed to for reading.i try my best to get out of it but had to slip them on the other day, someone said i look really intellegant!

Kladdkaka · 18/12/2011 21:15

I love mine. I have pink, sparkly Edna style ones. I loves them.

GooKingWenceslas · 18/12/2011 21:26

I like mine, but not in winter when I'm in and out all the time and they steam up Xmas Sad

DH has a thing for girls in glasses Xmas Wink

ViviPrudolf · 18/12/2011 21:26

What Beamur said. In its entirety. B, are you me? Confused

smartyparts · 18/12/2011 21:28

I'm with you, OP, although it may be vain.

I wear lenses and would never go out in my glasses. DH is the same.

workshy · 18/12/2011 21:29

I can't wear lenses :(

LordOfTheFlies · 18/12/2011 21:32

I wear glasses for work (and bonus, I don't meed to bother with make-up)

On non-work days (DD calls my mum-house work days. DS calls my 'day off' .Little git) I wear contact lenses. But have to fill in eyebrows and put on make-up.
Otherwise I look like Frank from Shameless.

cinnamonnut · 18/12/2011 21:36

YANBU! I avoid wearing mine as much as possible - only wear them in class and when I'm travelling.

MoreBeta · 18/12/2011 21:43

Had my eyes lasered this year and I really think I look so much better now I do not wear glasses all the time.

I still have to wear them to read still but I am practicing whipping them off and waving them about to emphasise a point if I am talking to someone.

TheSmallClanger · 18/12/2011 21:48

I wear them occasionally. It isn't the way they look that bugs me, it's the fact that I'm always aware they are there on my nose.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 18/12/2011 22:08

Ha! You should see mine, they are falling apart Jack Duckworth sylee, i just

refuse to get any more.DH has given me money twice (bought a nice bag). I need them for TV and driving.

Funny thing is i can't hear very well without them.Xmas Confused. I'm gonna have to get a new pair after Christmas.

inchoccyheaven · 18/12/2011 22:12

I hate wearing my glasses too especially in public, I feel conspicuous and ugly at the same time.

I too had national health glasses and had the mickey taken out of me for it. :(

Strawbezza · 18/12/2011 22:24

I love wearing glasses, I've worn them since I was 13 and even liked the NHS ones. I consider them a piece of jewellery, not a medical appliance. There are so many fantastic frame designs now too.

staylucky · 18/12/2011 23:18

DD went to the flicks with her dad today, has brought home the 3D specs, popped the lenses out and been wearing the empty frames all night in a series of jaunty poses Confused

See some folk like em!!

Dawndonnathatchristmasiscoming · 18/12/2011 23:20

The great thing about glasses is, when you're older they hide some of the under eye wrinkly bits!
I lurves my glasses!

TheOriginalNutcracker · 18/12/2011 23:21

I can't not wear my glasses. I wore mine part time from age 13, and the fulltime from 18 and I think I look weird without them now.

I wore contacts when i was bridesmaid for my friend, and I absolutly hated all of the pics of me because it wasn't me iyswim.

YonderRevoltingPeasantWhoIsHe · 18/12/2011 23:23

I wear contacts 24hrs a day pretty much (I have those breathable ones) but I do wear glasses periodically to rest my eyes.

I have to say, I feel somehow more disconnected from the world in glasses - like my peripheral vision is worse and I somehow don't see/ react as well. I don't like it.

Have considered laser surgery but have been told that it doesn't last long enough to make it worth it (now 32, told it'd barely last 10 years Confused).

YANBU to feel as you do but do take care of your eyes - if you've ever known someone blind or seriously visually impaired you'll know how precious eyesight is.

CointreauVersial · 18/12/2011 23:26

I'm another glasses-hater. I loathed them as a child, and have worn contact lenses continuously since I was 15.

I'm now 44, and have been more-or-less ordered by the optician to take a break 2-3 days a week and wear glasses. I didn't even have an up-to-date pair at the time!

So I force myself to wear glasses to work a couple of times a week, and I really hate the way they make me look. I sort of shrink into myself, feel so unattractive; I swear I even walk differently when I wear them.

I will continue to wear them when I can, but I don't think I'll ever like them.

ViviPrudolf · 18/12/2011 23:31

OP is your inability to wear contacts related to the laser surgery? I've considered surgery but for me, contacts are not inconvenient enough to warrant it. I didn't know about time limitations, Peasant, that's interesting.

CointreauVersial · 18/12/2011 23:33

I asked my optician about laser surgery Vivi, but he said I'd rather missed the boat, as my eyesight is now getting longer (age-related, of course, oh joy) so it wouldn't be worth it.

Blooming typical, all those years I couldn't afford it, now I can, and it's pointless.

workshy · 18/12/2011 23:34

YonderRevoltingPeasantWhoIsHe

my laser eye surgery lasted 11 years before I started wearing specs for driving so I considered it good value (£200 for a pair of specs)

my peripheral vision isn't great anyway but I know what you mean about feeling like you on the outside looking in

I hate driving in them -can't just flick my eyes up to the rear view mirror, I have to move my whole head

my dad has glaucoma and a good friend of my parents has macular degeneration so I understand the need for good eyecare

the best glasses I ever had were rimless ones when I was 17 but I realised I looked a right wally as when people were looking at me they could see the bridge piece but nothing else!
so comfy to wear though
