To want the midwife to sign me off work?

and if so how do I ask for it? Never having been signed off before I don't want to look like a total scrounger!
Am 11 weeks preg and constantly sick/dizzy/headaches and tired out. I spend half my work day in the loo and the other half trying to eat something to stop me feeling sick.
I'd really like to spent the next week in bed and get some sleep - it doesn't help that ds hasn't slept properly in over a week.

Thanks guys, midwife got me an appt at the hospital tomorrow morning for blood sugar tests in case I am developing diabetes. Not sure this is really necessary but am fed up of the sick/shaky/dizziness so going along to see how we get on.
Spoke to my boss yesterday and told him how I was feeling and he said don't push yourself, your health is the most important thing!
So tomorrow is hosp all day as the blood thing is 2 hours then scan in the afternoon and if I dont feel up to Thurs/Fri I will self cert.
Then its Christmaaaaaaaaaaaas! Thanks for all the advice

(I'm a GP) As others have said, you can self-certify for one working week, so 5 days if you work Mon-Fri or 7 if you work weekends as well. If you are sick for an 8th day, your employer is entitled to ask for a sickness certificate, or fit note as they are now known. More info here

Employers should not ask you for a GP fit note if you are sick for less than one working week, so most GPs won't issue them for the first week. We tend to take quite a firm line on this because issuing fit notes during the first week of illness would use (literally) millions of appointments per year which would then not be available for people who need to see a GP for medical reasons.

So I'd suggest that you self-certify for a week, then see how you feel. If you are still not better, speak to your GP. Hope you feel better soon Smile

I am sorry you are so tired but what a waste of resources to demand a med cert when you don't require one. You don't need to see a GP, as many have said, and I wouldn't be surprised if you are charged for it if you insist on having it.

If you self-cert and tell work it is pregnancy related, I'm sure they will bend over backwards to be anything but funny about it, if they have any sense.

I hope you feel better soon, the first trimester sucks, doesn't it?
