to serve these cakes, or will I kill everyone?

Very pissed off with myself. Bought some lovely little cakes for a get together tomorrow (I'm crap at baking before anyone asks me why I didn't make my own! Grin). They are lovely, pretty, dainty wee things and they were quite expensive, for me anyway. Brought shopping in from the car, stuck cakes on bookcase in the hall while I took everything else in and then forgot to put them in the fridge. They are fresh cream and say 'keep refridgerated' on them. They were out from about half 8 last night til 5 this morning when I woke up and ran downstairs to put them in the fridge. The hall is not the warmest place in the house but certainly not the coldest, prob about 18 deg.

I'll have to chuck them won't I? I can't serve my lovely, pretty, dainty cakes can I? I know this is petty but they really are pretty but I don't want a child being ill because I'm a forgetful knob. Sad

Sniff them - if it smells sour then bin them - if they smell ok eat them.

far too much food waste in thiscountry

You won't kill a kid by serving soured cream, but the cakes might taste awful - just try one and check. If they smell and taste fine you can serve them.

let one come to room temp (or thereabouts, like it's been on a plate waiting to be served), and eat it yourself. If it tastes horrible then don't serve them.

Out for 9 hours is a fair amount of time - I'm imagining if I went to a lunch party and cream cakes were out from midday to 9pm, would I eat them? Hmm maybe. It'll be obvious if they're off though and won't kill you to try, so give it a go.

gastrognome · 17/12/2011 06:55

Can you taste a wee bit of the cream? If it doesn't taste off then they should be fine to serve. Surely no worse than leaving the milk out for a few hours!

roundcornsilkvirgin · 17/12/2011 06:55

how warm was your house? my kitchen was freezing yesterday

Megatron · 17/12/2011 07:07

I'll have to eat a few one then. If I keel over I'll know to bin them!
