Father Christmas charging for photographs

Was I being unreasonable to send the following complaint letter, and am I being unreasonable to expect a response even if to say they don't agree?

This is what I emailed;

On visiting Harewood's Santa's Grotto today with my three children I
was most disappointed.

I pre-booked my tickets on-line, at a cost of £22.50, along with £5
parking fee I was spending a hefty £27.50 for my three children to see
Father Christmas.
My older 2 are old enough to be excited and enjoy the experience for
what it is, my youngest at just 13 months however doesn't really have
a clue what it's all about. I only booked her a ticket too as I wanted
to have them all together for a photograph and the website made it
clear I had to pay for any child entering the grotto.

I was astounded when we arrived at the Grotto to see that no
photographs were allowed in an attempt to extort yet more money from
us by selling photographs for nearly £10 a print! Not only is this a
ludicrous amount of money for a photo we could have easily taken
ourselves at no expense, in this day and age most people would much
prefer a digital photo. I later discovered that the price for
photographs had gone up from the previous week, I presume as Harewood
realised they were onto a money maker and decided that ripping off
poor parents who are obviously going to find it hard to turn down a
photo of such a special moment for their children was the way to go.

My main grievance is that NO WHERE when booking on your website does
it state that photography is forbidden and that such extortionate fees
will be charged if you want to buy one. If I had been provided with
this important information at the time of booking I may well have
still booked for my older children but I would most certainly not have
paid out £7.50 for my youngest.

To add to my irritation although we had booked a timeslot, well three
in fact, we were delayed by almost 15 minutes due to a technical
problem with the snowflake dome, so not only did we have to wait with
a very impatient 1yr old we didn't even get to experience the
snowflake dome's full splendour.

Whilst understanding the need for Harewood to make money I find it sad
that you feel the need to do this by misleading your loyal patrons.
Can I suggest in future you at least let your customers know all the
facts at time of booking.

Have yet to receive a reply, is it a bit OTT? Meant to add my older children received a fairly decent present, but my youngest was fobbed off with something of far less value which I felt was off as we paid the same for all three.

Is it normal to have to pay for photographs? I've never had to prior to this occasion.

I've also had a few friends posting photos of their children with Father Christmas on fb, so thankfully some places still don't charge.

And a day with dolphins is far better than 3 minutes with Father Christmas nojustificationneeded!

I've never heard of parents being allowed to take their own photos.

And regarding the gift, some of the money you paid will also go towards the cost of the staff and the Grotto.

Just back from Lapland and meeting the real Santa and was charged 25 pounds for the photgraph after paying 500 quid a head to go there ! I was raging......

AWimbaAllTheWay · 16/12/2011 11:45

The grotto was at harewood house in one of their domes, it's open anyway so they aren't paying for extra electricity etc. It was decorated with a few Christmas trees and was supposed to have a projection on the dome which wasn't even working. The only extra staff would have been Father Christmas himself and the photographer.

I have heard they're struggling financially at the moment but I don't feel putting customers off completely is going to help.

And I'm still amazed it's the norm to charge for photos, guess I've just got lucky in the past.

Lmao @ meeting the real Santa! Xmas Grin

AWimbaAllTheWay · 16/12/2011 11:46

Now that is shocking jen127, I'm feeling the need to stop complaining about my measly £10 in comparison.

When I used to take dcs to Harods Father Christmas was free including small present but they charged £10 for photo and that was over 10 years ago.

WorraLiberty · 16/12/2011 11:47

They'll have to pay rent to Harewood House. The Grotto costs money to make and to transport and as you say, there'll be wages for Santa and the Photographer.

I have 3 kids...eldest almost 20 and youngest just turned 9.

IME you always have to buy the photos rather than be allowed to take your own.

AWimbaAllTheWay · 16/12/2011 11:53

We were in there 5, 10 minutes tops, If we's bought the photo that would have been £37.50 for 10 minutes. Admittedly the toys the older children received were pretty good and definitely worth the price of entry. Still annoyed about photo and youngest's toy though.

Now I'm just annoyed that everywhere is charging so much for photos. I don't even know what i'd do with a physical print, it'd just get stuck in a drawer somewhere. These day's I either create albums online and get photobooks printed or look at my photos on the pc.

They don't pay rent, it's run by the harewood estate, they own it. There was nothing to transport, it is there all year round. They would have to pay photographer and santa though.

They wouldn't have to pay photographer if they let people take their own photos. Grin

Its a rip and we all know it but it keeps our children happy.

We paid £20 for 2 children(£8.50 each) and 2 adults(£1.50 each) then paid for the photo although our photos where cheaper cannot believe £10 for a photo!! we paid £7.50 in the end but it came in a lovely glass frame we could of had it in a paper frame for £3.50

AriesWithBellsOn · 16/12/2011 12:08

Why are you willing to be ripped off because it keeps your children happy? Confused

AWimbaAllTheWay · 16/12/2011 12:23

I'd have been happy to pay £3.50 Chattymummyhere.

AriesWithBellsOn, I think it's more people are willing to be ripped off because it's had to turn down a photo of your children on such a traditional occasion. I did, but I am sad that I don't have a photo of the moment.

Harrods was £10 this year (previously £5). This was then credited to your clubcard to be spent in-store. This year's grotto was a bit lacking I thought. However, Father Christmas was the best one yet (this is the 3rd year we've been) - he actually hugged DD and let her sit on his lap (we're in the room, what's he going to do??). They do photo "packages" with a single print costing around a tenner - this comes with a special Harrods velvet (albeit cardboard) frame. No photos are allowed to be taken in the actual grotto but you can snap away while you're queueing and also when meeting the dressed up characters after.
