It changes nothing.
MN has been linking to FB for a long time. People have been posting threads to FB for a long time. If anyone likes the thread it appears on their wall but it does not identify you in anyway.

And the main point...everything you write here is already on the internet for the entire universe to read.

There is an FB like button on everything now. Everywhere you look online. If you don't like it, don't click it and your life will go on exactly the same as before.

The foot stamping and moaning about a minor insignificant change is really getting tedious.

Yes, I remember that, Bibs. Leah Hardy, wasn't it? I am tempted to give her username too, as she clearly didn't give a shit about anybody else's privacy. She misattributed quotes too, which meant that somebody, who didnt suffer from piles was alleged to have them etc, and had to namechange. Most incompetent and unprincipled (quelle surprise).

I still think the whole thing was a storm in a teacup

NeuromanticisedVisionsofXmas · 16/12/2011 17:01

Oh do come on now! If you were really worried about the anxious and vulnerable, you would be agreeing with me. Because MN is not anonymous. Anyone who thinks they are anonymous and have never possibly featured on FB is WRONG and should take this opportunity to learn.

This is not some little bubble where you can say anything and be invisible. You can be outed, you can be tracked, you can be linked on FB. None of this is new. You are not anymore at risk now than you were yesterday. You can be quoted in the paper and on the radio.

Any of the above is unlikely to happen to you. But it can. It could of yesterday before the button and it could tomorrow if they get rid of it. You are being hysterical and OTT, to the point of inventing excuses. Every other page on the internet has an FB like button, it is almost ubiquitous. Grow up and get with the technology. Or dereg and then you will have nothing to worry about.

mn is a business and brand, and as such tries to keep up with trends etc.so fb links is no surprise

there is a big element of double standards going on.folk harrumphing at being associated wiyth dm,despite its prominence on mn (linked daily). apparently mind comments being reproduced in dm,but all jostling to see and preen if mentioned in mn parenting books. in both situation comments lifted and reproduced. except in mn books there was a brag if got mentioned

baubleybobbityhat · 16/12/2011 17:07

Yes it was LH boffy. If you put her username I spect it would still get deleted.

scottishmummy · 16/12/2011 17:08

whats the value in raking over who it was, there was a nasty witch hunt at the time. no need to start it all again

baubleybobbityhat · 16/12/2011 17:12

What do you mean raking it over? Someone asked what happened.

BiancaStroud · 16/12/2011 17:17

I think it's great. Anyone who honestly believes that their boycott is going to scare the MN people into changing something has a slightly over inflated idea of their importance. Ignore them, they just want you to post on their boycott threads how great they are and please don't leave MN so and so, it won't be the same without you.

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 16/12/2011 17:18

Oh, I won't mention her user name, I know the drill. She seemed alright to me on mumsnet, but she has an incredibly vacuous journalistic persona in the DM these days.

scottishmummy · 16/12/2011 17:18

discussing her name, its old history.doesnt matter who it was imo
the fact is mn has been here before: handwringing and harrumphing about site changes, treats of dereg, a few rattles flying oot prams

in a few weeeks time this will be no big deal

LineRunnerCrouchingReindeer · 16/12/2011 17:18

I've seen people come on MN late a night who are fucking suicidal.

They think it's safe, on many levels.

Isn't it, then? Is it all just Charlie Brooker and Black Mirrors? Take your chances, don't be naive and fuck off, this is business.

That's not how I perceive MN to be.

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 16/12/2011 17:19

Yeah, I think we've covered that one now, scottishmummy. You can leave it there if you like.

scottishmummy · 16/12/2011 17:20

exactly this is a few harrumphers whipping a hoo ha and hoping someone (anyone) begs em oh dont go soandso mn wont be same without you...

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 16/12/2011 17:20

Of course it's not safe, Linerunner. Even after the watershed.

usualsuspect · 16/12/2011 17:21

I'm getting a bit fed up of people referring to anyone that uses fb as a thicko tbh

scottishmummy · 16/12/2011 17:22

if you think mn is a cosy chat to pals youre deluded
it is a business and brand not a therapeutic community.and its not anonymous

LineRunnerCrouchingReindeer · 16/12/2011 17:23

Ah well.

i also recall the fake stories, fake rapes, non existent mental health crisis, dodgy pram scams. mn is a plethora of stuff some of it very real and pertinent but some of it not as it seems

you need to be canny, and internet savvy about the words on your screen

scottishmummy · 16/12/2011 17:27

youre not compelled to change rl name to username
but common sense and internet savvy guides that we do so
there is a current thread about someone outing another person from a forum and retaining printed copies of posts they made

NeuromanticisedVisionsofXmas · 16/12/2011 17:28

Ah come on LineRunner, I feel like you are arguing for the sake of it now and frankly thats my niche.

It's safe...ISH. But its no more or less safe with the FB button that without. Some of the problem seems to be that people wouldn't want people to know they use MN, why is it something to be ashamed of? Because thats the only thing people will know if you do click on the button, nothing else.

baubleybobbityhat · 16/12/2011 17:32

daily mail thread for anyone who was interested.

scottishmummy · 16/12/2011 17:34

aye do love a bit of mn double standards as folk harrumph about dm,which despite never reading they know its content.still must have found it in a cafe, at their parents, in GP surgery

JamieComeHome · 16/12/2011 17:35

sm - it didn't "fizzle out" though, did it? MNHQ stopped doing it

scottishmummy · 16/12/2011 17:37

my recollection was it fizzled the indignation haze receeded, the flouncers came back.and big wide world isnt as obsessed by mn as some believe

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 16/12/2011 17:39

No, the Mail dropped it because it was fucking boring. Now their journos just pretend to be newbies and research their articles that way.
