Depends what you can afford. When I gave my mother's removal men a tip, it was £5 each with "Get yourselves a drink each".

I should have said it was in 2004.

I tipped £80 to be split between the 6 guys who moved us over 2 days.

Wish I was your garbage men!

My removal guys did above and beyond for us and were finished by 2pm. I gave them about £20 each to the 3 that had done the hard graft. i was so glas it was all over!!

I last moved 5 years ago. 3 removal guys, gave them a tenner each and they seemed happy with that so yes 20 ought to be enough.

Agree, it depends what you can afford and how much they're charging. We moved last year. Removal fee was £180, we rounded it up to £200 (and also plied them with bacon butties, chocolate and endless soft drinks and cups of tea)

It's not an AIBU question though is it?

£20 each!? Shock

They really must be doing a good job!

I didn't tip my removal men anything when I moved, but I didn't think they deserved it just for doing the basics of what they are paid to do anyway. Plus one of them unpacked the box containing the microwave before the box with the kettle, and told me the shop round the corner was open and it was possible to make a cup of tea in the microwave. So there was no way I was going to tip him because he was rude, and oddly enough as I was moving on my own with two small dc, I had better things to do than make him tea.

I would only tip if they went over and above what is expected.

I've not tipped removal men before. But I think if you want to, tip what you can comfortably afford. The service they provide is pretty expensive in itself.

ConnorCamden · 15/12/2011 10:06

Nothing. I've never understood tipping. They are getting paid for doing the job. Why tip anybody?

Our removals men were fantastic. They also did the packing and were worth every penny. Once they had put all our furniture into our new house we got them lots of rolls/cakes/pasties from the local bakery as a thankyou.

Birnamwood · 15/12/2011 10:23

I gave mine a crate of beer each which they were overjoyed with! I also plied them with drinks all day and bacon butties (which for some reason the company doesn't allow but I turned into a bit of a Mrs Doyle and they relented Xmas Grin) they were really good lads and worked their arses off all day, I would have given cash but beer seemed more appropriate, more of a gift iyswim.

I moved a couple of years ago, heavily pregnant with a 14 month toddler and my DH we had two guys who went above and beyond their duty and made the move so smooth that we gave them £40 each. I think the cost of the move was about £150. We moved into a 3-storey town house and them must have climbed the stairs about 20000 times in just one afternoon. Barely stopped for lunch and were really amazing when trying to get our sofa upstairs into the living room on the 1st floor. It didn't work so ended up with it on its end in our kitchen for a week. (Then had to get an upholsterer to take it to pieces and then rebuild in the sitting room, I'm never moving again.)

They were the nicest, most helpful people I've ever met in my life and worth every penny. So I would tip depending upon how they managed the move for you.
