I am 33 years old

I distinctly remember my gp telling my mum that I would grow out of it by the time I hit my teens -they lied!

I have just spent the last hour smothering myself in cream and now I feel all greasy -it's not a good look!

everytime the weather changes it flares up and I've had enough of it now -grumble grumble grumble

I also haven't grown out of it completely ...but then it's a lot less severe than I had as a child. Cold weather definitely seems to bring it on.

Not eczema, but allergic asthma. Doctor told me would grow at 14yrs, now at 42 I'm thinking he ment 114.

mousysantamouse · 15/12/2011 08:56

where my allergic asthma has morphed into proper asthma instead of me growing out of it...

The other thing that makes eczema so hard is that people have no idea just how disabling and debilitating it can be, not to mention depressing. It's seen as a minor non life threatening ailment, when I and others I know have been suicidal over it.

I haven't grown out of my psoriasis and I'm 53. Two things that I find help.
Trilogy vital moisturising cream. Expensive, but lasts for ages. Very soothing and known here as 'magic cream'.
Lush, Dream Cream, keep it in the fridge, it's really soothing when you have that horrible burning feeling.

I'm another adult here with eczema. It was under control till I had the dc too. I only bathe/shower every 2/3 days, use Balneum in the shower. I smother myself in Epaderm every night, and use Dermol during the day (doesn't leave the 'freshly basted meat look). I alternate using Eumovate and Protopic as and when necessary to deal with flare ups.

Unfortunately ds1 has had awful eczema since birth, and as a toddler was regularly hospitalised. He gets a bath once a week at most, and just a quick wipe with a damp flannel in between to get the football muck off. Restricting bathing has been the single most important thing for me and ds in reducing our eczema. Don't know quite what we'll do when he turns into a smelly teenager, at the moment his skin only copes with full submersion once a week (and we put Epaderm on him before his bath too).

Argh. It's a horrible thing to have. I sympathise op.

have your tried giving up dairy? thats solved it for us

cazzybabs · 15/12/2011 23:40

Mine came back 2 weeks ago after an absence of 16 years :( - itch itch scratch scratch and 4 children

Try goat's milk.

I haven't grown out of it neither. I seem to be getting new patches every so often. My right arm has horrible white patches where its scarred my skin. My hands are better as I use Aveeno creams & HC creams when its bad but I stopped using Dermovate yrs ago as it made more mess on my skin than the eczema did.

Yankeecandlequeen · 16/12/2011 10:46

Oh Epaderm makes me itch like mad! I hate it. Its like drowning in a sea of grease. E45 makes a mess too - hate that. Aveeno is the only one I use now - both I & DS get it on prescription. When I got married 5 urs ago I decided to use a sunbed for 3 months before (for a bit of a tan like you do) and my skin cleared up beautifully - no patch of redness at all & my hands were lovely. So in the new year I'm gonna pop down the salon a couple of times a week for 3 months to give it a boost before the warm sun decides to show its face again.

OldeChestnut · 16/12/2011 10:47

im almost 50 now and i still get flare ups if i use a certain washing powder or shower gel

elliejjtiny · 16/12/2011 10:59

I still have eczema at 29, always horrendous when I'm pregnant. In the new baby photos of me and ds3 you can see it all over my hands, arms and neck. Thqank goodness for lush, at least now I can use stuff in my bath that smells nice.

BliggOfTheDump · 16/12/2011 11:04

I've developed eczema since last pregnancy. I went to the GP with little white blister type bumps on my hands and she called it pustular eczema (nice!). She prescribed betnovate steroid cream to dot onto it.
It has got a lot worse so I guess I'll just wait for the sun.

oldmerryolesoul · 16/12/2011 11:22

I have very mild eczema as a child.. as in small areas not enough for my mother to bother seeking treatment, I only know now it was eczema. It flared up in my 30's and is the kind that gets worse in winter damn central heating.

I've always been irritated by smelly stuff but along with the eczema worsening I can only use bio powder once or twice before it begins to bother me. In the last few months I have started to sneeze/itch eyes run just walking down the washing powder isle in Sainsburys
