This just makes me so sad. I had a friend who was an only child as a kid - she was so spoilt and treated her parents like scum. I remember occasions when I was round there and she would tell her Mum 'Get out of the kitchen - we want to bake something' and her Mum would look worried and say 'wouldn't you like me to help? You don't know how to bake' and she'd swear and physically push her mother out. Or demand that her mother drive us to the video store, rent an age inappropriate video and loads of snacks for us then 'piss off'... I was always so mortified to be around her like that as her parents were lovely people. Her mother died unexpectedly when she was 18 and I expected to hear remorse and guilt at the way she had treated her, but she barely even seemed to care. SO I feel terrible for the mother in the article, because letting your child treat you like that isn't going to make them love and respect you, only resent you.
