To be hankering after a proper, old-fashioned christmas?

I hate the modern christmasses, with their pink and purple and wrapping papers/baubles. I don't like modern christmas trees, I've seen monstrosities in BLACK and turquoise fgs! What is the meaning of this?!

I would like to see a return to proper christmasses like what we had when we were little. One "big" present if you were lucky, wrapped in proper thin paper and then a few bits that would keep you amused for all of christmas. I wouldn't mind of someone wanted to come carol singing at my house, either. They would be invited in for gluhwein and mince pies. After dinner, everyone sits down to watch a proper christmas film instead of having their faces stuck in their Nintendo WankStain.

Sorry, all of the pink/purple decorations on This Morning have mad me feel a bit stabby.

Shrugs.... my lounge is traditional colours, we go to the local pub for Carol Singing and Mince pies and we are working our way through every Christmas film ever made and trying to decide which one will be the christmas day film (obviously we'll end with Its A Wonderful Life) we're stuck between The Muppets Christmas Carol or Christmas Vacation. I love my lounge. The tree is mostly red and gold.

Our 'middle room' (dining room come hall come cloak room) is done out in 'modern' Quality Stree colours and looks fabbo. All the sweets are kept in here, and I've utterly fallen in love with the pinks, purples and turquoises around this year.

The kitchen is frosty.

The bathroom is snowy.

My room has a few twigs and some window stickers and fairy lights, and the boys' room is full of everything else.

There's nothing wrong with different themes, just don't do what you don't like.

I like Christmas far too much, and have such a happy clappy time of it that I cannpot get annoyed with other people's habits. (My Godfather has a black tree with black glass decorations, and it look amazing, but not for me).

Hullygully · 14/12/2011 14:56

no no, each to their own. I never used to like xmas much so I overcame it by embracing it reeally really thoroughly..

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 14/12/2011 14:56

I don't object to tat. I object to shitey Disney nonsense and people who buy pre-decorated trees.

Hullygully · 14/12/2011 14:57

My friend has a silver tree entirely covered in pink baubles. It is so great.

Hullygully · 14/12/2011 14:58

And, get the hankies out, I had ghastly unspeakable Christmases of disaster as a bairn. So we have bloody fabbo ones now.

SantasStrapon · 14/12/2011 15:00

I really want one Hully, where would I find one?

Hullygully · 14/12/2011 15:01

Mine came from ESK a few years ago. I've never seen them since though.

SantasStrapon · 14/12/2011 15:03

Is it one? (youtube). Massively jealous.

bonkersLFDT20 · 14/12/2011 15:04

We have a real tree with my now retro Woolworths lights and tinsel and gold baubles.

The children get one main present round the tree, maybe a few smaller ones and their stockings and we don't play any big games consoles because we don't have any.

If that's what you want then do it...you silly billy

Hullygully · 14/12/2011 15:04

No it's MUCH better. That is a furry thing.

SantasStrapon · 14/12/2011 15:08

Would you take a photo of it please? So I can gaze at it, and mourn that I will never have one.

Hullygully · 14/12/2011 15:09

I'll try (can't right now), but no guarantees I can manage to get the photo from the camera to the screen...

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 14/12/2011 15:09

It's tricky to find the pauper child with rickets.

Hullygully · 14/12/2011 15:12

I did just meet a poor homeless person with very few teeth and gave them all the money I had on me. Does that count?

SantasStrapon · 14/12/2011 15:15

Thank you. Xmas Grin

jened34 · 14/12/2011 15:19

It's the first Christmas where we can stay at home and I can't wait. Totally chaotic decs put up by dcs and lots of traditions in the making.

Any suggestions welcome!

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 14/12/2011 15:19

Yes. Presenting them with plum pudding would also work.

WhoopsyLa · 14/12/2011 15:22

YANBU I went so far as to buy thin vitage wrapping paper from Ebay last year...it was FABULOUS>..mint in package and straight from 1975....with pictures of candles, Father Chritmas and Lanterns as well as Horses and Carriages....tho why they were considered Christmassy is beyond me....but they were SO right...I loved them. I have reserved a piece to smell.

We do traditional Christmas I guess but decorations can only be gold or silver and the use of tinsel is strictly limited. Otherwise it's wreaths on the door, cards pegged on lines and silver sprayed fir cones everywhere

OrmIrian · 14/12/2011 15:54

"The kitchen is frosty.

The bathroom is snowy.

Ooh sounds like song lyrics!

Mine would be more along the lines of:

"The kitchen is messy,
the bathroom is grubby
My bedroom is a terrible sight.
There's chaos in the sitting room,
And santa is coming tonight"

"The dogs chewed the presents,
The cat's eaten raw turkey,
And is puking all over the floor,
The tree lights aren't working
And santa is due through the door"

etc repeat to fade ....

OrmIrian · 14/12/2011 15:59

Look, oh look!

And the blue FC one too! Bliss

Ifancyashandy · 14/12/2011 16:18

Oh dear. You would might hate Christmas round mine. Silver, white, hot pink and purple ornaments only on my (real, admittedly) tree. And NO TINSEL ALLOWED ANYWHERE IN THE HOUSE (I live alone. This is easy to enforce). And I hate thin paper. And yes, mine does co- ordinate with the tree.

And 'goldy' coloured lights only too. None of yer multi coloured tat ones. Or bright white either. Only soft glows allowed!

MrsHeffley · 14/12/2011 16:19

Hmmm I know what you mean.

I've been reading too much Soulemama blog, her with her peppermint bark making and fabric gift wrap, they "brought their tree in" yesterday.

Looking at the gaudy monstrosity in our playroom and still nursing rabbit stare eyes after an all day hell shopping session in comparison I feel a tad inadequate.Old fashioned takes time, lots of it imvho. The mince pies would need to be made from scratch for starters.

We have a real tree in the living room bedecked with home spun,Shaker type stuff though as a nod in her direction.

Kladdkaka · 14/12/2011 16:21

My nan always wrapped our presents in tin foil because she forgot to buy wrapping paper. Every year. :o
