To expect to being given a valid reason as to why I was not given a job, not , "it was easier for her to have it"

I enquired about a post where I work, they gave me details and said they were in the planning / budgetting stage and would let me know.
the next thing I know is I get an email to say :Thank you to you both for showing interest in the ICT support job.
As the hours are just before school it was felt that this would be easier for *** who would be here in the mornings anyway.
Thank you both once again for your interest
That was a good way to interview and I think it beggars belief that they think it is a valid reason to give the other lady the jobShockAngry
To rub salt into the wounds I was in doing a time sheet today and another member of staff was struggling, and an office staff member said herding knows what to do on the computer , she will show you . I am flabbergasted by their audacity

They are between a rock and a hard place - they know you have children, they know you would have to change your hours because of your family commitments, but they can't actually ask you "Can you describe how you would cope if the kids were off sick?" because that's discriminatory as well.

I'd say the onus would have been on you to tell them "I'd really like to do this job and I'm willing to change my hours to suit because the job NEEDS morning hours and I'll do XYZ to make sure that I honour that commitment"

The lady who has been given the job, also has children. They are not primary age, and I would say 90% of us who work there have children ,so telling me it was because of child care issues is just not on.
I could not tell them any more than I had child care in place. That surely shows a commitment. Also they did not interview either of us to ask any more information, it was just "easier" to give it to her. I have this in an email copied to us both, not even BCC , our names shown and addressed to us both .

An update, I had a meeting and then went back to see the person dealing with it yesterday morning. The other candidate has now been told there will be a formal interview and aptitude test.
It turns out now the body who oversee us are meeting in the new year and they are going to force an audit of the recruiting procedures covering the time since our new boss came in,as there has been so many irregularities .
I will go for the interview as that will at least give the job to the person who is most suited to it, I am happy with that. All I ever wanted was a fair and legally processed opportunity to try for the post.

Thank you all. Just a pity when you have be the one who stands up for the right thing, when really they should just play by the rules they actually set !
Then again I've never been one to hide behind the parapet Wink
