Maybe I am exceptionally dim, but I have heard multiple scientists "explaining" what it is today, and I am none the wiser!

To be fair, I would say it only becomes imperative once you wish to do so once you include universality in your belief system. If your "god hypothesis" concerns a deity that exists and is relevant only in your personal reality, I suppose you're free to determine your own standard of acceptable evidence.

Then again, I think that's more commonly referred to as "imaginary friend" under such circumstances.

OP - my father is a Cosmologist - we often have converstaions of this nature, if you cannot explain it & quantify it - does it really exist?

You say it does but you can't actually tell me what it is?

You say that & this - but what actually is it?

Much of physics is of this nature - you may be able to prove it through maths, you may be able to prove it with your large hadron collider - but what exactly are you trying to prove?

& no matter populist scientists tell you - given this question most of them would be hard pressed to answer.

Admittedly, when it comes to hard physics language has its limitations.

But that's exactly the point.

To be honest i think the 'prize' for many is still trying to prove that quantum mechanics didn't actually unravel relativity.

Careers are still made of this.
