In thinking MN is full of contradictions ?

Kova · 13/12/2011 19:01

For example, high earners set to lose child benefit = mumsnetters up in arms, weeping on each others shoulder.

Skint carers set to lose £200 per month out of sweet FA and being scared shitless over what the future holds = nobody giving a flying fuck :/

Who doesn't give a flying fuck? I think you will find most do!

nikon1968 · 13/12/2011 19:03

This is what makes mn is fun/weird/sad/happy place to be.

I agree, this happens with so many topics - I am always amused at the threads about making a chicken last ten meals, how to save money on food, the outrage about schools asking for a £1 for 'non-uniform day' etc etc and yet when you look at the Christmas present threads it seems perfectly acceptable to spend £100s on childrens' presents Xmas Grin.

HecateGoddessOfTwelfthNight · 13/12/2011 19:04

That's probably because there's thousands of people registered users of mumsnet and therefore many different opinions.

So the people who are up in arms about cb are not the same ones who are scared about changes to financial support for carers.

It's really not an either or, because there's not just one person on here, typing away. So you get such a wide range of views on everything.

There's no such thing as the MN view and therefore there is no contradication. That would imply that the same person holds contradictory views.

Kova · 13/12/2011 19:05

Nuff said

Would be great if a few could 'sign the tition' tho. Xmas Wink

Peachy · 13/12/2011 19:05

Koxa YANBU, the same people post on the welfare threads and that's comparatively few.

Kova · 13/12/2011 19:17

Xactly Peachy. If wehad a few more people getting antsy over real issues we may even be able to make a difference.

The objections to the loss of CB aren't usually because of the loss of the cash element to high earners.

It's that a household on £80k can keep it, whereas one on £45k can lose it. And that they remain silent on the NI credit. Piss poor administration.

The erosion of the principle of independent taxation is pretty shit too.

OldeChestnut · 13/12/2011 19:23

lol when people stop smoking, drinking ,subscribing to sky telly, buying takeaways and iphones, they might have a bit left over

HecateGoddessOfTwelfthNight · 13/12/2011 19:25

oh no. Not that olde chestnut again.

RainboweBrite · 13/12/2011 19:35

Er.. isn't RL full of contradictions as well?

Glitterknickaz · 13/12/2011 19:47

and people wonder why I took an extended break from here....

usualsuspect · 13/12/2011 19:49

welcome back Glitterknickaz

Glitterknickaz · 13/12/2011 19:51

Cheers usual.
Comment aimed at Olde, apologies for not making that clearer.

Morloth · 13/12/2011 19:54

YABU MN isn't one person.

People care about different stuff, mostly about what effects them.

TroublesomeEx · 13/12/2011 19:59

I don't think people do 'not care', more that there are lots of people who are affected by some things, and maybe fewer people affected personally by others. And people post about things that affect them personally (in a constructive way, people will post unconstructive comments about things they know nothing about). Not even sure that makes sense Xmas Confused

Not only that, but on a lot of the threads about disability and carers, it so quickly descends into a slanging match (people don't ignore the idiots, they argue with them) and trading insults (e.g. "nobody giving a flying fuck") that everyone feels 'got at'. I certainly don't like being lumped in with some of the sweeping generalisations I read and it's so easy to have your point misconstrued or your tone misread, that I imagine a lot of people avoid these threads for those reasons.

Doesn't mean they don't feel strongly about it though.

TroublesomeEx · 13/12/2011 20:04

Sorry Kova, wasn't having a dig with my quote, I was just being lazy but also illustrating a point that all of us, with the best of intentions can so easily say the 'wrong thing'.

When it's a subject as sensitive as the welfare of our friends and families, or equally about a subject that doesn't affect us at all, in the slightest but when we feel unjustly accused of not caring, it stings.

FairlyDinkum · 13/12/2011 20:04

This is a bit of a strange OP. Of course its full of contradictions - its full of thousands of different posters.

Hecate said it better - but I don't know why it needs to be explained Xmas Confused

KalSkirata · 13/12/2011 20:22

I think people imagine it wont be them being a Carer. It could happen to each and every one of us in the next minute. Or tomorrow.
But its head in the sand time.

SinicalSanta · 13/12/2011 20:27

I think you are right Kal.
It's the same mindset as those thinking the poor are naturally inadequate or else they wouldn't be poor. They themselves would never be a carer or disabled or downright poor as they believe they deserve more than that, and fundamentally, people get what they deserve.

Glitterknickaz · 13/12/2011 20:30

Can I just use this opportunity to plug the campaign again?

Gwan. 2061 emails aren't enough. Two minutes that's all it takes and the impact will help disabled children more than you'll ever know.

Peachy · 14/12/2011 16:37

LMAO at oldechestnut

don't forget goat; have you got my goat? Have you wrapped it for Christmas with the iphone, sky TV and takeaways I don't have? I do hope so Grin- you can skip the alcohol and fags, not a smoker and haven't enough time to drink.

Will keep an eye out for a goat shaped parcel
