Was I being unreasonable to have taken these shoes back?

DD had new school shoes for September. Last year she had Clarks which lasted all year. (very slow growing feet)

This year I brought Geox as they had the best fit in the shop although more expensive than Clarks. (£40)

2 weeks ago the velcro from one of the straps sheared off and the strap started to disintegrate.

DD is pretty careful with shoes, not particularly hard on them IMO.

I took them back to the shop today and explained that I expected school shoes to last longer than that, and would like a replacement. Shop were mildly reluctant initially but replaced with clarks and refunded the difference onto my card which I was a little Blush about. (and wasn't expecting)

Was I unreasonable in my expectations? Am feeling a little embarrassed this evening about the brand new shoes (half a size bigger Blush) and the £10 reinbursment. Felt very sure of myself this morning now not quite so sure.

Shoes should last a lot longer than a few months....

No not at all - I have heard Geox are not that great wearing and our local shoe store has stopped stocking them because of so many returns. It is a shame as they often have nice styles.

YANBU. I'd expect any shoes I bought for myself for more than a tenner to last at least a year.

halcyondays · 13/12/2011 17:26

Yanbu, you would expect £40 shoes to last longer than that. As you say Clarks are cheaper but I find they last well.

YWNBU. School shoes, in my opinion, should most definitely last for more than a term. Particularly at that price!

i am in the same boat - should i return my dd's shoes bought in september cost £80, i asked the girl if they were hard wearing for school etc she assured me they were, i did point out that the heels didnt look like they could be re-heeled as they were a moulded heel again they reassured me that they were very hard wearing and would be fine. You should see the state of them - they are fit for the bin - should i have a go at takng them back - still have the receipt and probably the box - they are from Jones the Bootmaker, which i have always had no probs with - any advice please ?

SleepyFergus · 13/12/2011 18:54

Absolutely take them back. I would!

mariasophia · 13/12/2011 19:03

oh i will give it a go - it wont do for these shops to be charging these prices for rubbish quality - if they were half the price then i would just chuck them but 80 quid is a lot. And she didnt even wear them for two weeks of the term as she was in work experience and wore boots or her non school shoes. Not tarnishing the JOnes brand as i have on today desert boots bought years and years ago and they look pristine.

Thanks all, I feel much better about it now. DH couldn't even believe I'd tried it!
