AIBU to think my HV was a bit unfair with regards to DDs speech?

DD has just turned 2 and went for her 2year review yesterday.

She has always been a 'walker' rather than a 'talker' but I know she is behind with her speech. I told the HV she definitely can't say 50 clear words, (more like 20) with a fair few others that only I understand. She isn't really trying to string sentences together yet either, just babbling in her own language. She is however very good at communicating so she isn't frustrated about it at all.

HV has scored her at 15 months for her speech Shock AIBU in thinking this is a bit harsh? Or can most 15 month olds say 50 clear words?

My DS wasn't an early walker or talker (he's making up for it now). At 2 he probably had about 10 clear words (v important ones to him like car, key, door). I was stressing out because of all the suggestions that he should be making 2-3 word sentences etc etc, but at about 2.3 his language took off and he suddenly started talking loads and in proper sentences and everything... children all develop at their own pace!

(yesterday DS said to DH 'No thank you, I do not like broccoli, therefore I am not the right person to eat broccoli. Mummy likes broccoli, so you should give it all to her!' - he's now 3.2 Grin)

The important thing is that DC are communicating with you - through eye contact and pointing etc. If they're not then it suggests there may be a problem with their hearing which may need to be looked into. If everything else is normal then just keeping talking to them and sooner or later they'll talk back. :)

We didn't have a 2 year check up here - just a leaflet in the post entitled 'now I am 2 I can ...' with a list of things 2 year olds should be able to do (including the letter sounds they should be able to make) and a number to call if you were worried about any of them Grin.

I sometimes think these checks cause necessary worry. I suppose they can be useful but imo these things usually sort themselves out and children develop at their own pace anyway. If there was any major issues I'm sure you'd know, your dd will more than likely suddenly make a big leap and her language will literally appear overnight.

We did not have a two year check but would have been 'marked' low for language if we had. I'd have worried and worried and it would have been for nothing as DS is now 2.5 and can speak in long sentences with adjectives and connectives. He hit about two and four months and just made a massive jump. I was concerned before this I must admit but literally overnight his language suddenly went from individual words to sentences.

So while I'm not sure if hv was BU or not, I will say don't worry (easier said than done) and more than likely your little girl will just suddenly start to speak!

There was? There were! My major issue appears to be my grammar.
