To think that Amazon and Ebay charge stupid amounts for postage?

I live quite far from a town that has terrible parking problems and shop online quite frequently. I tried to order an item from Amazon that cost £1 but I wanted a quantity of four.

Final cost £9.97.

The item was gift tags. It was fecking made of PAPER.

£5.97 to post some gift tags.

I have made my own which I should have done in the first place really.

Robbing bastards. Do they take advantage at this time of year and NO it wasn't express delivery and I added them to quite a large order and then deleted them.

I always manage to get free supersaver delivery from Amazon... Ebay can be high as sellers don't pay fees on postage.

belindarose · 12/12/2011 20:14

I don't buy anything in amazon unless it's free delivery or very cheap. Would rather look elsewhere.

BrianButterfield · 12/12/2011 20:14

You can usually get free delivery on Amazon things - they must have been Amazon Marketplace, in which case it's a small seller who probably sells the product at a loss and makes money on the postage (I have sold books for 1p on Amazon Marketplace - you only make money because they charge slightly more for postage than it costs you). Same with eBay.

daenerysstormborn · 12/12/2011 20:15

don't think i've ever paid delivery for amazon, always go with the free delivery if it's offered. they say it takes longer but it never has.

peacypops · 12/12/2011 20:15

I always get the free sueprsaver delivery on Amazon - takes a little longer but not usually a problem

NoOnesGoingToEatYourMincePies · 12/12/2011 20:15

I once tried to order one single leaflet from a charity website.

The leaflet cost 10p and they wanted £5.99 in postage for it. That's to put a leaflet in a standard envelope with a stamp on it.

YANBU. Postage costs are as random as lottery ball selection sometimes.

CMOTdibbler · 12/12/2011 20:16

I have Amazon Prime too - tis brilliant. Ordered loads of stuff late on Saturday and it was here this morning.

thisisyesterday · 12/12/2011 20:18

but amazon delivery is free :-S

it only costs if you are buying from another seller, via amazon

FabbyChic · 12/12/2011 20:20

You are told the postage costs before you buy, so you can always buy elsewhere.

Trills · 12/12/2011 20:20

YABU

You're not talking about Amazon and Ebay at all.

You're talking about buying through through Amazon and Ebay from other people.

squeakytoy · 12/12/2011 20:54

I agree with what Fabby and Trills have said. Amazon and Ebay are not shops, they simply host for individual sellers.

You see the postage costs before you buy, and most sellers on Ebay are reasonable.

Sometimes they do try fee avoidance by upping the postage and lowering the cost of the item, but if you are happy to pay the overall price, then its no skin off your nose is it.

ShellyBoobs · 12/12/2011 21:30

YABU.

Amazon do free 'supersaver' delivery and Ebay don't charge you anything at all when buying something.

KittyFane · 12/12/2011 21:38

eBay postage is expensive so that sellers get more £ for their item.

For example, a CD sells for £1.00 + p+p £3.99 = £4.99.
Actual cost to post £1.50.
Seller gets £3.49 for CD (not £1.00 bid).

Amazon is free as others have said.

:)

GoingForGoalWeight · 12/12/2011 22:22

YANBU Xmas Sad

stressheaderic · 12/12/2011 22:28

I think the fact that Amazon continues to offer supersaver free delivery is brilliant. My items usually arrive quickly, and if they don't, Amazon tell me when there's a delay.

A few Ebay sellers do rip you off on postage but the majority are fair and reasonable - if you disagree with the postage charge, don't bid, simple as that.

Could I just ask how Amazon Prime works? I notice they keep offering it to me. Am a heavy user. Xmas Grin

fedupofnamechanging · 12/12/2011 22:51

What is Amazon Prime?

andaPontyinaPearTreeeeee · 12/12/2011 22:51

What trills said.

My friend keeps trying to persuade me to pay for Prime - well, I don't have £50 a year to spare.

But you'll get things the next day! He says.

Um... I don't care. I am geeky enough to plan my online shopping in advance, so I've never needed or even wanted anything the next day. Super Saver is fine TYVM. :)

MenopausalHaze · 12/12/2011 22:53

Anyone who sees an Ebay listing for a £1.00 CD with postage of £4.00 and then goes ahead and buys it deserves everything they get! Always always shop around - you need to be told that? There's always plenty of sellers with reasonable postage.

Firawla · 12/12/2011 22:54

Amazon are great how most of the stuff is available on free supersaver so yabu on that I think. Although i noticed that now you have to specifically click to get that, they have put the default on first class postage, it never used to be that way. When they just changed that I didn't notice and accidently left it on 1st class, so I contacted the customer services and they refunded me the postage for that time as it was a mistake. I find they are very good like that
Even ebay has a lot of stuff with free postage, I tend to go for things with the postage free if I can. Atleast as fabby said you can see the postage cost up front and chose to buy it or not.
Mostly if i want one item only and wouldnt wanna pay a fiver postage or whatever most websites seem to charge, I go to look on ebay or amazon specifcially becuse they normally are the best options for getting stuff on free postage!!

Civilon · 12/12/2011 22:55

Oh....the next day....

trixymalixy · 12/12/2011 22:57

YABU you can almost always get free delivery on Amazon. eBay is another matter as others have said it is the seller taking the p, not eBay.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/12/2011 22:59

Amazon prime can be good, but last Christmas all my orders went on normal delivery, no prime option available. Was a bit of a swizz
