ExH wants to buy DS a quad bike for Christmas and I am objecting

on grounds of safety. This is my gut feeling, and he knows that I was not keen on him getting one. DS has just turned 4.

I feel that ExH is doing this to upset me, and he also says that I am wrapping him up in cotton wool.

AIBU ???

YANBU. What a stupid idea for a present.

FabbyChic · 12/12/2011 20:01

Its a ridiculous idea for a four year old.

OhTheConfusion · 12/12/2011 20:02

YANBU they are dangerous!!!

This happened near us in the spring.

pigletmania · 12/12/2011 20:03

YANBU what a stupid present for a young child, what does he want to do kill his ds!

Sparklingbaubles · 12/12/2011 20:03

YANBU. Shock

Winkly · 12/12/2011 20:09

YANBU. Dangerous and will not make you popular with the neighbours either.

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 12/12/2011 20:12

Yuck.

BlissfulMistletoe · 12/12/2011 20:12

is it a battery one or petrol

VivaLeBeaver · 12/12/2011 20:12

Ozzy osbourne was nearly killed on one. There was a girl in the peppers a few years ago killed on one. Yanbu.

ToddlersRFab · 12/12/2011 20:14

Winkly I don't think he is bothered about being popular at the moment.

I am also annoyed as we discussed only spending a certain amount on DS, (we only split up in September), and this is way over the total budget.

www.toysrus.co.uk/Toys-R-Us/Bikes-and-Rideons/Battery-Powered/12V-Ben-10-Quad(0081011) If it something like this then it has a max of 7kmph (a very brisk walking speed) and is a toy. It still needs to be supervised but there are a number of battery operated toys like this. The accident above where the boy was killed involved a proper quad bike and not a toy.
IMO if your exH wants to buy your DS a toy battery operated quad to ride round the garden and you have the space YABU but YANBU if he wants to buy a high powered quad.

randommoment · 12/12/2011 20:23

What going said.

BlissfulMistletoe · 12/12/2011 20:23

unless we know if it is a baterry or petrol we cant decide

storytopper · 12/12/2011 20:27

I think a "toy" like that gives a DC all the wrong messages - goes too fast, dangerous, bad for the environment (fossil fuels), expensive, doesn't encourage healthy exercise, noisy... sure I could think of a few more objections. What's wrong with a bicycle?- with stabilisers, if necessary.

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 12/12/2011 20:28

Oh I think we can decide - this is MN Grin.

What storytopper said. That.

MetalSian · 12/12/2011 20:46

My DP has bought DS (2.5) a 50cc petrol mini quad bike for christmas.
I will be riding it with him until he is old enough to ride it himself, then it will be limited to 5mph.

I still don't agree that it is a good present for a young child though.

BUT if you get all the protective equipment it might make you happier?
Helmet, gloves, body protectors and such like.

Sparklingbaubles · 12/12/2011 20:53

Where are these quad bikes being ridden? I assume you would have to have 'some land'. Confused

maras2 · 12/12/2011 20:56

Accident waiting to happen, and very (for want of a better word) chavvy.

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 12/12/2011 20:56

50cc? Isn't that the same as a small moped?

Honestly, I cannot understand it. Toddlers of 2 and 3 are often not in control of their own bodily functions. Some cannot talk. Most are more than a little wobbly. And people expect them to control a mini-quad bike?

Ah well. I expect I'm just old and grumpy and know nowt.

You've been Framed type programmes usually have some examples of quad bike incompetence.

Dunrovin · 12/12/2011 21:11

Surely it is one of those plastic monstrosoties powered by a battery and which will be really awkward to get to the park, take up loads of space in your house etc? And are really boring to ride because they just sedately plough on? The kids always look dead bored on them.

Small children should be having a wild time on a balance bike, or a proper bike, not aping adults on dangerous machines or boring motorised over priced tat.

If it's a real thing and you have safety concerns (as well you might) then I don't know what to suggest. Would it be kept at ex's house?

serin · 12/12/2011 21:29

Utter tat.

He would be better off giving him a scooter and putting the rest of the money into a savings account for a real car (or car insurance!)

squeakytoy · 12/12/2011 21:31

YANBU at all... far too many fatal accidents involve quad bikes. :(

A friend of mine died after colliding with his son while they were both out riding.

They are dangerous.

racheyroo28 · 12/12/2011 21:37

Me personally not for that age, my little boy has just turned 4 and still has stabilizers on his bike! Needs to be a bit older I think, hear too many horror stories about quad bikes!
