Just opened a parcel from mil containing some of her old sandals. With a note inside saying " dear mebythesea i thought you would like these shoes, they no longer fit me. Love from mil" they are old, used, not my size, smelly... I think this is a very odd gift. Dh seems to think that its her trying to build bridges as we've been on /off estranged for a number of yrs.
Im feelin like maybe she is starting to go a bit potty...
Aibu to be a bit freaked out by this offering?
She is known for oher odd presents... Cheifly a wrapped boxed lemon!Hmm

Just accept it in the way it's meant. It's certainly eccentric but also well meant I would have thought. Bin them. Tell her it was a lovely thought but they are not your size so you've passed them on to a charity shop.

Yanbu to be 'freaked out'.

Deberny · 12/12/2011 12:33

That is weird. How old is she? My MIL has been saying strange things and getting very anxious, I'm keeping an eye on her in case it's dementia.

bushymcbush · 12/12/2011 12:34

That should say YABU to be freaked out.

Hassledge · 12/12/2011 12:34

If it's the latest in a string of odd presents then I wouldn't worry re dementia but yes, it is definitely odd :o.

She is 68. We live on other side of country and only recently resumed any contact with her. Dont have anything to do with fil or bil So not sure how she is really. I was thinking poss dimentia, but there have been so many odd things overe the yrs that i partly think its just her way.

Sounds like you should regift this present to the bin. But definitely keep in contact so you can see what bizarre cadeux she will come up with in the future.

Redrubyblues · 12/12/2011 12:52

You were The Lemon Lady! There was a thread going last year about weird gifts and you were mentioned with us all begging you to join in and explain why your MIL gave you a lemon!

Grin

You never showed up Xmas Sad

QuintessentiallyFestive · 12/12/2011 12:53

Can you not find a nice way of sending HER a gift?

Slightlytinsellyexpat · 12/12/2011 13:06

Just take it as a well-meant gift, even though it is of no use to you!

She is a "war baby" who probably finds it difficult to throw things away. My DM is 80 and finds it very difficult to throw out anything at all. I, at 51, am a little more enlightened and am happy to throw out rubbish but like to give useful stuff to a good home. People a generation younger than me ( maybe you OP?) probably don't have these tendencies to hoard things.

Just say that the sandals didn't fit so you gave them to a friend or a charity shop.

mebythesea · 12/12/2011 15:38

Oh poor mil... I am being a bit mean i think. Im not ungrateful for the gifts, the thermal suit is now worn by dh to work (he is a 6ft4 15stone bloke!) The lemon was delish... I will bin shoes and send a thankyou card.
