is not properly dressed without tinsel. Feel free to open up the discussion to children's makings, baubles etc ;-)

I have no tree. My room is bare and barren

melliebobs · 11/12/2011 22:45

Nah no tinsel in this house. Silver beads and purple 'angel hair' which is kinda like tinsel!

GypsyMoth · 11/12/2011 22:46

No!!!

It draws the eye to the clumpy line round the tree and deflects from everything else

GypsyMoth · 11/12/2011 22:47

Children's offerings go round the back too!

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 11/12/2011 22:48

We only had blue + Silver tinsel but have gone for multicoloured tree this year - We only had blue lights so we decided to for-go tinsel + use (20p a pack) angel hair - It looks lovely but it feels like it is lacking something, I will be off to la shops tomorrow to get some I think!

Love the angel hair though, looks really pretty am dreading having to hoover it all up daily though

peeriebear · 11/12/2011 23:00

Our tree has tinel of every colour I could find. I love it. So there! I have:
Red
Green
Silver
Gold
Royal blue
Turquoise
Pink
Purple
Black/multicoloured
Silver/blue
Silver/purple
Orange (from Halloween)
Purple/pink (ditto)
Probably a few more I can't see. Our tree is pretty full and gaudy and we love it :o

peeriebear · 11/12/2011 23:01

And tinsel, as well as tinel.

WhoopsyLa · 11/12/2011 23:05

I have never had tinsel and every year DH has moaned that he needs tinsel. I went and got red and silver and also a dull green one like a sort of garland...non sparkly...I wrpped them so they are pefectly on...twined evenly around and WITHIN the branches not stiking out...added coloured lights and all ou baubles and ornaments...GORGEOUS!

It's a medley of anique, vintage and modern ornaments..allvery high quality glass...some wooden and the odd fabric....I love it! TInsel all the way!

CocktailQueen · 11/12/2011 23:14

I love tinsel! we have black, purple and gold on the tree this year (See, quite minimal :))

RomanChristingle · 11/12/2011 23:18

No tinsel here I prefer it without. Twinkly lights, candy canes, wooden decs, paper mache baubles and beads on mine. Looks lovely.

TysTheSeasonToBeJolly · 11/12/2011 23:18

My tree has no tinsel, first year ever. But it looks reasonable to be honest. Xmas Grin

Grumpla · 11/12/2011 23:20

You have to have a wee bit of tinsel!

Trick is definitely to put it on first after the lights, pushed well back between the branches. Then it just adds sparkle rather than looking messy.

FoxyRoxy · 11/12/2011 23:21

No tinsel ever. It smells funny, moults everywhere and looks cheap even when it isn't.

Our tree has lights and baubles and looks great, so yabu Xmas Grin

MerylStrop · 11/12/2011 23:23

I say no to tinsel
Shedloads of lametta
If I put tinsel on the tree DD will only be yanking it down to dress herself in it. She's four and will be unable to stop herself.

startail · 11/12/2011 23:32

NO tinsel on the tree.
Tatty kids stuff low down or at the back.
Tasteful bead chains are tolerated. Real glass baubles are strongly encouraged. No theme the baubles are old friends collected over 20+ years. I'm a really fussy about them and DDs are only very recently allowed to help.
I tend to collect rich jewel coloured ones so tinsel would over power them.
I like tinsel, it goes round mirrors and pictures, just not on the tree.

startail · 11/12/2011 23:35

Yes that is the other problem with tinsel. I have lovely pictures of the DDs in fairy fancy dress wrapped in the entire contents of the tinsel bag.
I also recall stealing all the tinsel off a pub tree to wear to the disco later that eveningBlush

ThatVikRinA22 · 11/12/2011 23:41

yanbu!

i have the mostest tastefullest tree ever, with glass baubles in beautiful cream, chocolate, bronze and gold shades

tis vair tasteful

and i have the biggest fattest tinselest tinsel in gold. tis gorgeous. and a bit of skinny tinsel in bronze. but the fat stuff is just peachy.

im gonna have to upload a pic just to show that tinsel is ok people....

MakesXmasCakesWhenStressed · 11/12/2011 23:48

tinsel everywhere, but not on the tree... although... we have a tree in a pot and the red bucket thing the pot sits in is shorter than the pot, so I've hidden the ugly terracotta plastic with gold tinsel... technically this means there is tinsel on the tree, just not on the branches. It looks pretty, anyway.

Rest of tree has german market wooden ornaments, chocolates, two glass baubles DH and I have bought at significant moments (we're hoping to collect more as we go on), mini gold crackers and little red and gold baubles. We used to have a homemade angel on top, but she was made of paper and has got too tatty... I need to make a new, more permanent one, in the meantime it's a big gold translucent bow made from wire-edged ribbon.

DizzyCow63 · 11/12/2011 23:50

YABVU, tinsel on a tree is horrible! As are coloured lights! Only a bead chain, colour-coordinated baubles and clear lights. No child will get near it!

Ds1 is only 7 months so I may change my tune in a year or two!!

FoxyRoxy · 11/12/2011 23:51

Oh there's mini crackers on there as well. Just no odd smelling tinsel Xmas Wink

MakesXmasCakesWhenStressed · 11/12/2011 23:52

Oh yes - clear lights on ours.

My sis and I used to have an 'alternative christmas tree' - a large potted fig we dressed in silver and lilac tinsel and baubles and strung lights through - still only ever clear lights though. Even when we rebelled and were tacky it was still with taste and a colour theme! ;)

ThistleWhistle · 11/12/2011 23:57

A tree aint a christmas tree unless it's got tinsel on it! I don't do themed decs. My tree is covered in tinsel and baubles and lights of different colours. It looks like one big shiny sweetie and it is fab-u-lous.

flyingspaghettimonster · 12/12/2011 03:25

I don't use tinsel - I have beautiful wide ribbon in antique gold with mistletoe sprigs on and I use that, alternated with a wide red one with gold snowflakes. It would be really classy as I only have red and gold decorations - except the box of several hundred animal ornaments we were kindly given have all been rearranged endlessly by my kids and so there are about 17 to each lower branch... oh, and half the branches are off at the back where the fecking cats climb up and have a fight [fhmmm]

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 12/12/2011 03:59

TINSEL is a must. So are coloured lights, various coloured baubles and various ornanments. 'Decor' trees are just Not Right - you have all year to make your house a 'designer home' - Christmas is for colour, fun, sparkle!!

Kids ornaments get pride of place!!!!

tigerlillyd02 · 12/12/2011 04:06

I use beads on the tree instead. I do have some tinsel around my fireplace though.
