BlissfulMistletoe · 11/12/2011 20:18

3 days without a cigerette and I could just about kill someone. I didn't want to give up but my 5 year old dc and dh keep going on about me smoking.

Will it get easier as ATM I could kill for a cigerette

You're doing really well and it does get easier. Is there anything you would like to do or learn to take your mind off it at all? Are you on nicotine replacement? If not, they really help but you have to find the right one for you. Good luck, you're doing great so far.

Probably not the answer you want, but im(extensive)e on this subject, you need to want to give up yourself for it to stick.

The physical cravings do get easier fairly quickly, but you have to adapt your routine for the mental cravings to go away ie: if you always have a fag with a cup of tea, or in the pub with mates.

Well done for doing three days - the worst bit is already over! Smile

Well done. This is the hardest time as you are breaking the physical addiction. Don't give up (giving up! Grin) after this, it's just the habit of having it in your hand, the association - eg morning coffee + cig - that will get you.

You really have to feel that this is what you want. If you are doing it under protest, you are unlikely to succeed.

Just think how much better you'll feel, how you won't stink any more, how food will taste nice again, how you'll live longer Grin

You're doing really well!

Giving up smoking is the hardest thing...
I haven't given up yet - but I have stopped.
If giving up doesn't work for you this time, then I recommend Gillian Riley How to stop smoking and stay stopped for good.
Even now, nearly 6 years after my last cigarette, I get the odd craving for one. I still use the mantra that I learned: I have the desire to smoke. I have the freedom to smoke. I choose, for now, not to smoke.
When I want a cigarette, there is nothing to stop me walking to my local shop, buying a pack of 20 and smoking them. Other than my desire not to smoke.
The freedom of not smoking is amazing; before, I used to leave home and check that I had my keys, my purse, my cigarettes, my lighter. And count how many cigarettes I had - was it enough to get through the day? If not, did I have enough money to buy more? And a lighter, or matches...
Now, I need to check that I have my keys, and purse. I love that freedom. :)

Jeez - I didn't realise that I was that evangelical Blush

You have to get thru the first three weeks, then you are home and dry.
Put all the money you would have spent on fags in a pot.
Look at your ds sleeping and know that you are doing what you can to stay alive for him.
Eat chocolate.
Feel sorry for people who still smoke.
Say to yourself: "I don't have to smoke. I have a choice. I am almost free of being an addict."
You could have fun without smoking when you were a child, and you will again.
You can do it.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 11/12/2011 21:41

You can do this! you've come this far, and if you had one now, it would be nice for a few minutes, but then you'd have to start all over again and be back to square one with cravings and resisting and all that shit. Try and hang in there and it gets easier every day. I stopped a couple of months ago and it is so fucking HARD it's unreal (and I actually had a massive heart attack and all the attendant crap that goes with it) and I STILL want one sometimes, but it DOES get a little bit easier to resist each time, honestly it does.

maras2 · 11/12/2011 21:53

Blissful. You've done the hardest part.I know that I sound like a born again lung lover but stick with cold turkey if you can, if not then use a nicotine sub.I stopped a 30 a day habit nearly 4 years ago and have saved as much money as our first house cost.Mind you we're oldies but not that old.Best wishes and good luck. Mx.

Seriously the physical addiction has now passed. It's just habit from now. Every time you get the urge do something else. Anything be it as silly as snapping your fingers, brushing your teeth, just do something to distract yourself. It will get better, I promise!
