Travelling on east coast train from york to London with three yearold dd. Dd wanted an apple. First we asked in the buffet carriage. Guy said to dd no fruit why didn't she have chocolate or crisps? Dd said no she didn't want anything else .

Later a lady came down the train with a trolley and we asked again in case she had fruit. Lady said fruit was only available on first class . I was asking to buy fruit not to be given it for free . Aibu to be a bit shocked by their attitude?

I read the title and was thinking I've been in 1st class and I'm sure they were selling other stuff apaprt from fruit. Grin

But seriously, yes its bad. If they had fruit there then they should sell it to anyone.

Your DD says no to chocolate and crisps and just wants an apple? Wish mine were like that! It does seem silly though, I would be annoyed too

I feel for your DD although in my case (another train company I think) I wanted to buy a muffin but was told they were reserved for first class Xmas Angry.

Had to laugh to myself at snack discrimination though. Perhaps they thought my common-as-much palate wouldn't appreciate a highly-sophisticated muffin Xmas Hmm or maybe that I would be too poor (actually given the prices in general that might have been correct)

Is it not that they've got two separate sets of at-seat catering on the East Coast trains, one set 'free' and one set paid for? If you go first class, you get cakes, fruit, sandwiches and crisps included in the price of your ticket, and if you go second class, you buy food on top of your ticket price, but I don't think it's the same food to buy that's given out free. I think the lady was saying that she couldn't sell the fruit intended to be given out free, not that plebs couldn't buy fruit.

On the other hand, it would be nice if there was good quality fruit available to buy.

That does sound ridiculous. Mind you if they did have apples they would probably cost £3 each, so I tend to take my own food with me.

You will therefore like the announcement on this recent Newcastle-London train.

'Owing to severe overcrowding on this train, we are only able to offer First Class passengers teas and coffees. That is all. Thank you.'

Go Geordies.

Why don't you take your own? You'd be mad to buy anything on a train when you can take it for a lot cheaper

WorraLiberty · 11/12/2011 16:02

I'd take your own in future

These things are all supply and demand.

If there's not much demand for them, they'll end up going manky before they've sold them.
