last year i bought each of my direct staff (there are four) a box of posh biscuits and some posh wine. This year I was thinking vouchers - majestic wine vouchers for two of them and specific vouchers for the other two (For a beauty salon I know they use).

I have a dilemma every year because I dint want to buy crap predictable gifts but really am not sure what they'd actually like.

I bought each of them a £20 gift voucher which I put in a card and in their trays on Monday. The card thanked
Them for their hard work and commitment and support. The voucher us for a large quality supermarket so they can buy Xmas goodies.

Only two of the four said thank you :(

Are you sure the other 2 have opened them?

I am a lucky girl, I have 2 immediate bosses and also support a large team, my kitchen is well stocked with champers and wine and there are some lovely looking wrapped gifts under the tree too.

My main boss is taking me out for dinner tomorrow evening and will also give a gift (no idea what but know he has one as has made a fuss about seeing me for dinner!).

I am always very grateful for whatever I receive, it is lovely to get an acknowledgement of the hard work that goes in all year and some of them are royal pita's! But they know it :-)

I'd like my second flexible working request granted if Santa's listening!

I've been given bottles of wine/gin in the past, but the best gift ever was one my sister got from her boss, which was a lovely white stuff gift box, with a few of their products in. She's also had designer scarfs and other lovely presents.

I really wanted a payrise.

Yesterday I got one! Grin

Lisa may be right, they might not have opened them yet? Hopefully!

Good compromise in the end. My boss always buys us alcohol and chocolate. I rarely drink and it's never anything I like anyway so it usually goes straight down the sink unless I can find someone to palm it off on (rare). Such a waste of his money but I don't want to appear ungrateful so have never said (been here 9 years Blush). You're a very kind boss to think of what they might actually use.

This year I have 29 people who report to me (! how did that happen?!). I couldn't justify using £200 of my own money to buy something like a bottle of wine each for them, so I bought them all a ticket for Friday's Euro lottery. (£2 each).

All 29 have had the tickets now, only about half of them have said "thanks". I didn't do it for the thanks, but it would have been nice...

fifteenfiftyfive · 22/12/2011 10:49

From my boss? To be appreciated / valued would be nice. Nothing material.

From you? Anything, you sound lovely.

jen127 · 22/12/2011 10:58

I hvae six people reporting to me an dlawyas get them a bottle of wine! And they also get an Easter egg! It is just a small token of my appreciation form my own pocket, this year we got nothing from corporate.

I have a team of about 20 - mostly based in mainland Europe who had worked really hard this year. I know the company won't give anything as reward - we don't even get Christmas cards let alone a present - so I bought them all Amazon vouchers. This came to nearly £200 and a great deal of time spent faffing around on foreign language Amazon websites (and I only work part-time so don't earn that much), but I didn't mind as they have been a good team. However what I do mind is that only 1 of them (the most junior secretary) has bothered to say thank you!!

Lizcat · 22/12/2011 13:44

I own the business and we buy the staff M&S vouchers. Don't forget if they are coming from the business they need to go on the P60 and if you are a nice boss you pay the tax on them.

Luminescence · 22/12/2011 13:46

Some nice clip art of Rudolph?

NewBikeForChristmas · 22/12/2011 13:51

Only get Waitrose vouchers if there's one nearby! If I got Waitrose or JL vouchers, I'd have to drive 30 miles to use them.

HeidiHole · 22/12/2011 13:57

I'm not really a Gif person... I prefer Jpeg's

bah bum BOOM

custardismyhamster · 22/12/2011 14:12

I was just going to say that whatever gift you get, if you get a nice thank you card and write a very personal message in it 'dear X, thank you for your hard work and support over the year, specifically with Y project, hope you and your DC/cat/boyfriend/whatever it is they come in and talk about have a good christmas' I would appreciate that far more than any present :)
