AIBU to have never heard of a watch maker called Jaeger Le-Coultre?

Because I hadn't, and was recently (last week) left a watch by my grandmother of this make.

I took it into a jeweller today to get the catch tightened up, as it was a little bit loose and I was scared of losing it if I started wearing it...and it was a bit of an Antiques Roadshow Shock moment!

Oh Good for you! Nice suprise I bet x

Cathycomehome · 10/12/2011 23:18

It was! I was quite flabbergasted! It has gone into my parents' bank until I can get it insured properly. I casually wandered into the shop with the box in a Co-op bag.....

What are you going to do Cathy, keep it for obvious sentimental reasons or sell it?

coppertop · 10/12/2011 23:21

I've never heard of Jaeger Le-Coultre either. Blush

Cathycomehome · 10/12/2011 23:23

Keep it, but feel bad about keeping it, I think, as we are pretty skint, although both working, due to debts we are gradually paying off, and expecting a new baby in July.

coppertop · 10/12/2011 23:24

I've just had a look. Shock

Congratulations. :)

Cathycomehome · 10/12/2011 23:26

I know Shock, coppertop! I knew it was gold and when it was bought as it has the original box with the paperwork in....the paperwork does not mention the PRICE of the damned thing!

Do you think you would ever wear it? If not, I think I would sell it if I really needed the money. Perhaps you could treat yourself with a bit of the money to a watch or a piece of jewellery that you would wear (and you can look at and think of your grandmother). Know what you mean about being skint at the moment....whatever you decide, good for you Smile

Very expensive Swiss watch! I'd take it to a specialist dealer for a valuation, and I certainly wouldn't take it just anywhere for a repair. It could be worth tens of thousands of pounds, depending on the age/condition/metal and how sought after it is.

You might find it's very expensive to insure.

Cathycomehome · 10/12/2011 23:34

That's what the jeweller said, olgaga!

He looked at me funny when I casually presented it to him and said "Do you think you could tighten this catch up a bit? I don't want to lose it as I've just been left it by my gran, so it's quite sentimental", and he said "Have you gat any idea what you've actually GOT here??".

And I looked at HIM funny, and went "Erm - an old watch?" Blush

When I looked blank when he pointed out the make, he said as if talking to a complete idiot "You've heard of Cartier? Rolex? Think better...."

OP posts:
Cathycomehome · 10/12/2011 23:53

(PS according to this jeweller's estimate, and he did say you need to get it looked at by a specialist, it is NOT worth tens of thousands of pounds, but an awful lot to us - and certainly more than the sort of £100 I had guessed!)

PigletJohn · 11/12/2011 00:16

ask him to value it and put it on your insurance pronto

(all-risks personal items).

Cathycomehome · 11/12/2011 00:22

I think my entire contents insurance (no buildings insurance, rented house) covers up to £2500....

RockStockAndTwoOpenBottles · 11/12/2011 00:29

Selfridges and Harrods have specialist Jaeger Le Coultre chaps. They are beautiful, I was given one for my 40th by my exP and that, together with my DD3 are two top things to come out of that relationship!!!

PigletJohn · 11/12/2011 00:30

you might find "valuables" have to be specified.

Most possessions are covered if they are stolen, burned or flooded in the home. The ones you carry around or wear need to be covered "all risks" which includes losing them in the street, being dropped and broken, being mugged, etc (risks which do not apply to TVs or beds as they are just house contents)

Cathycomehome · 11/12/2011 00:33

My dad did say that the best watch he's ever had cost £15 from Argos!

TBH although it is a obviously a VERY lovely thing to have received, I cannot imagine, even if I were rich, deciding to spend thousands of pounds on a watch! (Maybe this is because I have never been rich).

OP posts:
Cathycomehome · 11/12/2011 00:34

Oh - thanks PigletJohn - the man in the jewellers was VERY insistent about "proper insurance" being necessary. I will look into it.

OP posts:
Cathycomehome · 11/12/2011 00:36

(It is MENTAL that a WATCH seems to be worth more than ALL the rest of our stuff!)

OP posts:
ShellyBoobs · 11/12/2011 00:41

you might find "valuables" have to be specified.

I agree, they may cover up to £2500, but the single-item limit for non-specified items is usually less. I'd definitely add it to your insurance as a specified item.

By the way, OH's colleague recently had a watch of the same brand left to him by a Great Uncle; what a coincidence!

OH and his colleague are very much into watches, though, so neither was in any doubt as to what the potential value was, unlike the lovely surprise you've received.

Alicious · 11/12/2011 00:42

Wow! Very very chuffed for you-and a bit jealous! That must have made your day :)

Cathycomehome · 11/12/2011 00:44

The jeweller teased me - very mean! He said "Would you be happy if I said this was worth £500?" "Yes!!" I said. He went on "What about 6 or 7....THOUSAND???"

OP posts:
RockStockAndTwoOpenBottles · 11/12/2011 00:46

I have to insure mine separately. The premium on my normal contents was ridiculous if I'd done it on that. Arranged a policy for the watch only.
