To hate weekends

freakazoidroid · 10/12/2011 11:49

I hate weekends, well mostly. I don't like the fact that the house gets messier, we fight about what to do( we have a 12 and nearly 4 year old). I like my routine in the week. And Dh and I nearly always fight.
Anyone else like this?

Nope, but then all of us are happy to mooch, we're natural moochers. Your situation sounds like my childhood, neither of my parents work well without something specific to do and never had much time to plan ahead, so every Saturday morning was a mixture of Tizwas and rows.

How about build a small routine into your weekend (it doesn't have to involve the kids) my Dad was at his best when he was given a routine (make tea, hoover, make bacon butties) then given a job. My Mum was better too as she knew exactly what was happening. I hated it, but it was better than rowing.

Its okay to do nothing sometimes.

dreamingbohemian · 10/12/2011 11:54

This happens to us once in a while, usually when we're stressed about other things (work). I'd be quite worried if it was every weekend though. What do you and DH fight about?

justonemorethread · 10/12/2011 11:54

Sometimes I hate them and sometimes they go smoothly, unfortunately that always depends on other people's moods (mainly dh) rather than mine (because of course I Am Perfect)
Divide and conquer usually is best for us, but sometimes dh moans that he's just 'left' to deal with one of the dds.....???!!!

Catsdontcare · 10/12/2011 12:00

We're like aldiwhore moochers and potterers. None of us are dressed yet, ds's are playing and I've been doing odds and sods around the house. We will probably ge out of the house later on. I must admit it's more chilled when dh isn't here. For some reason I feel like we should do more if he's home.

valiumredhead · 10/12/2011 12:00

No, we all love weekends but we are natural moochers like aldi - quite happy to potter around all day.

valiumredhead · 10/12/2011 12:03

We're not dressed yet either cats - I am pottering around doing washing and tidying and going on MN and ds is doing homework in front of the telly

startwig1982 · 10/12/2011 12:04

They can be a bit stressful now we have DS and a routine with him (6mo). DH just wants to sleep and I want to do my normal things. So generally I get up and on with things and tempt DH to get up with nice food smells! Grin

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 10/12/2011 12:07

moocher and potterer here. also not dressed in this house yet. ds has been grazing food all morning and playing with his dinosaurs, playing with the dog, watching a ben 10 movie, building something etc. he has inherited my mooching skills thankfully.

normally i'd be dragging us out for a long walk with the dog by now but ds is quite poorly with cold so i have an excuse-- so we need to take it easy.

i do sometimes hate weekends though because i'm a single parent and have ds to myself the whole weekend rather than any breaking up of the days with school. he's only 4 and activities around here are limited for his age but when he is 6 he can join the local saturday football club which will give him an outlet and something to do and will give me a little time and structure.

i agree with getting some routine in there. maybe you or he could do the supermarket shop whilst the other stays with the kids and then the other gets a break whilst the other takes them out for a bit or something? mind you then you wouldn't see each other - though maybe that's not a bad Wink

valiumredhead · 10/12/2011 12:25

If your dh is home at the weekends, I would take yourself off shopping/see friends for a coffee, and make the most of it!

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 10/12/2011 12:28

ooh yes - you could do the shopping on a friday and hide it at a friends house. say you're doing the groceries on the saturday and in fact just go and have a nice morning with your friend and come back laden with the day befores shopping.

is that genius or what?

FabbyChic · 10/12/2011 12:29

I spend every weekend never takling to another sole, I'd work 7 days a week if not for my dog.

valiumredhead · 10/12/2011 12:33

fabby thank God for MN eh? Wink

FrothingBeserker · 10/12/2011 12:53

I hate weekends at the moment - dh is abroad on combined holiday/business trip, and will be for the next 10 days.

that gives me 2 weekends at home alone with dcs (8 and 5; 8 year old has ASD) while also being 9 weeks pregnant and have hyperemesis. nice.

the weekdays are hard enough at the moment, but at least I get a break while the dc are at school. today is really dragging...

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow · 10/12/2011 12:59

why don't you arrange to meet up with a girlfriend for lunch on the odd Saturday

cheeseandmarmitesandwich · 10/12/2011 13:14

Think yourselves lucky, I work every weekend. I'd love to be home right now especially with so much christmassy stuff going on.

It's a bright sunny day (here in London anyway) take the kids out and stop moping!

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 10/12/2011 13:45

oh yes the 'think of the starving children' argument - always helpful Wink

hope work flies by cheese.

Rhubarbgarden · 10/12/2011 14:14

Usually I enjoy weekends because I can dump dd on dh spends time with dd allowing me to do some gardening or get my hair done etc, but this weekend he's got a stag weekend so it's just like during the week really, except without other mums to play with, toddler groups to go to and the playgrounds are all rammed.

Rhubarbgarden · 10/12/2011 14:15

By the way Santa that is indeed genius.

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 10/12/2011 14:26

I like being busy but on my own terms. This weekend has been perfect for me because i'm poorly i've been given strict instructions to do nothing. DC are at their dads, DP is at work and all i'm expected to do is plough my way through my box set of 'The Mentalist' and possibly clean the rabbits out if I feel up to it.

However under normal circumstances I like my normal weekend of extra curricular ferrying around and walks in the woods. I'm couped up inside for 5 days a week i like to be outside for as long as possible as often as possible.

TheRepublicOfDreams · 10/12/2011 14:32

I love weekends. Dh is out till 3 every Saturday so I mooch with the kids, then we take the kids swimming. He will cook and then we cwtch on the couch together. Sunday's I work and come home to a cooked roast!

MrsPepperpotty · 10/12/2011 14:41

OP, I'm with you and like a bit of routine, so we have one at weekends but a different one each weekend iyswim. DH and I have a chat about what we need / would like to do that weekend and come up with a vague plan.

The nice thing about weekends for me is that we all eat together before the kids go to bed, so the evenings feel much longer when I don't have to cook another meal for me and DH.

What do you and DH usually fight about?

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 10/12/2011 14:42

i seriously hope someone uses my stroke of genius, particularly someone with a real pig of a dh who resents them having any time to themselves. i dont' need it myself as i'm single.

another idea would be to make up dental appointments/opticians etc for yourself that you legitimately can't take a child to. could get a good hour or two of peace out of a fictional root canal treatment Smile

i have slight envy for single parents whose ex's take the kids every other weekend - sounds like bliss. then again i know there are many many downsides to ex's being in your life. the grass rarely is greener.

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 10/12/2011 14:43

OOH!!! better yet you could have an imaginary counsellor who you can't see in the week and have to see on saturdays. that way you'd get the time to yourself AND the cash to spend!

i'm on a roll!

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 10/12/2011 14:44

a slipped disc that required weekly appointments with the chiropractor?

a work training course?

so many possibilities.

Candid · 10/12/2011 14:54

I think it depends if you have expectations of the weekend. Do you feel you have to do something amazing? Are you putting too much pressure on yourself?

We love weekends. We go out for a little while usually to the park if its good weather. I might go with dh, arrange to meet a friend or just by myself and the kids. We'll just chill for the rest of the day. Might eat out/get a takeaway or either dh or I will cook a nice dinner. Watch a dvd later. Onve in a while we'll go to the cinema or have a day out.

Most weekends dh and I will take time out to do our own things. Dh has gone out to see a football match and I'm going out to have lunch with friends tomorrow.
