I hsve been invited as a guest to a new mums group but I have a cold.
Will I upset the mums by attending?

No, everyone I know who's a parent has got a cold at the moment. Plus, once you show symptoms, you're no longer contagious. Take some tissues and have a nice time!Smile

Think it might be courteous to ring the organiser and ask. I'd not bemassively impressed to be honest.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 08/12/2011 08:27

The thing about not being contagious on e you show symptoms is just not true with colds I'm afraid. You shed virus every time you sneeze or blow your nose. If it were a toddler or older baby playgroup I wouldnt worry, but new mums with tiny babies frankly have enough on their plates without a cold on top.

rogersmellyonthetelly is correct. I would explain to the person who invited me that I have a cold, but would love to come once I was better. May as well start by making a good impression rather than getting them all sick weeks before Christmas.
Bit of info on colds, click link for entire article.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001698/
"A cold virus spreads through tiny, air droplets that are released when the sick person sneezes, coughs, or blows their nose.

You can catch a cold if:

A person with a cold sneezes, coughs, or blows their nose near you

You touch your nose, eyes, or mouth after you have touched something contamined by the virus, such as a toy or doorknob.

People are most contagious for the first 2 to 3 days of a cold. A cold is usually not contagious after the first week."

If it was a mother and toddler group I'd say no big deal (toddlers always seem to have snotty noses at this time of year anyway) but new mums and tiny babies? No way would I go and inflict a cold on them! Both my DCs had colds as tiny babies and both times it was a nightmare and something I could have definately done without.

Hope you feel better soon OP.

Speaking as a CM, there is a cold, and there is a COLD. I would phone and ask the organiser first, there might be robust toddlers there, there might be new babies, or a child that has a weak system etc. Best play it safe.

susiedaisy · 08/12/2011 09:36

yeah i agree with elizabeth

letmehelp · 08/12/2011 09:39

Yes, I agree with Elizabeth too, if you have a sore throat and are feeling a bit rough, I'd probably go, if you're constantly clutching a snotty tissue you should stay away. But call and check what they think you should do.

Hope you feel better soon

JoandMax · 08/12/2011 09:39

Toddlers fine, this time of year they are constant snot buckets anyway but new babies, absolutely not! That's the last thing a new mum and baby need
