To not drug my son to sleep?

My 6 month old recently had a severe reaction to a food. After the anaphylaxis he had a month of chronic hives which we now have under control with a dose of oral steroids and topical steroids twice a week. We were also prescribed 'potent' antihistmamine Hydroxyzine because piriton didnt make a jot of difference.

Now hes teething and ill. Apart from 2 nights, for the last 2 months hes woken 8-12 times a night on average because if one reason or another, itchinf because of the hives, a cold, teething or all of the above.

Now he has a bad chesty cold hes feeling awful, teary slight temp and teething to boot.

He went down at 6.30pm last night utterly exhausted, he woke every 10-15 minutes until 12am where he cried until 3am and woke/stirred every 15 mins until 6am. During this time Im rocking him, trying anything to keep him asleep. The 15 minute intervals have been the same for 3 nights and I expect no change tonight.

Friends suggest the antihistamine (calpol and neurofen havent helped but we're using them) because he needs the sleep (fuck me, so do I!) but I cant bring myself to do it unessarily. But I feel guilty, he feels awful and worse for no sleep. But every time I consider it I get a gut 'no' feeling even though I used it before for the hives (and I hated it then too!)

Hes yawning and crying on me now and Im feeling guilt for either decision!

Thanks. He doesnt snore and I went a bit crazy recently sorting out my hone incase of dust allergy. It didnt help his skin BUT he had an asthma attack when I pulled the sofa cover off. Cue me demanding it out the house that night having no sofa for a week but we have a nice leather now. Lol

With the 'immuniologist' I never knew there was such a think. My ears prick up when I hear this. But when I reas further your description is exactly what the allergy 'specialist' did and that was a pointless event. It gave us no answers.

Im super aware of wheat, apparently milk and wheat allegies can go hand in hand so we'rw avoiding that too. And soya.

Should you be avoiding whole food groups with such a young child without any specialist advice? I'm not trying to criticise, just be helpful.

No not taken as a criticism at all. Im taking suppliments though.

But mainly we have to avoid all milk products. Thats his allergy. Hes shown allergies to soya too. And with regards to wheat, Im pretty sure he can survive quite well without it.

Hes breastfed so at least has that milk. If he wants, Im prepared to long term bf if it helps. Not passed 3 though. I have to draw a line.

I just wanted to sympathise!! Recognising the waking every 15 minutes, unsettled uncomfortable baby, chasing round specialists and alternative therapists none of whom had the answers and the rice and beans diet! To top it off I was not a stick insect as a result of my dairy, sugar and wheat free diet and the last of the itching disappeared when I stopped breastfeeding. Good luck and I hope you find your answers and you all get some relief and sleep soon!!

Have you cut the dairy out of your diet while you are bfing him? If you haven't your should cut it asap, it's probably what is causing the lingering symptoms. My dd3 has a milk protein intollerance and it was severe enough to cause horrible reflux, rash and mucusy poo while she was EBF, she was failure to thrive until I cut all dairy from my diet when she was 8 weeks, after that she was a changed baby! Cows milk protein passes through into breastmilk.

Oh Gawd yeah I was living on rice a beans for a month literally scared to eat incase I ate a 'wrong' food.

Basically now I have absolutely no milk, soya or wheat in my diet and stick to very simple, low histamine foods.

MistyB can I PM you? You've got NO idea how much I need to talk to someone thats gone through the same!
