to think that a book dd has brought home from nursery shouldn't portray hitching a lift as a good thing?

Dd brought a reading book home from school yesterday where the characters went on an adventure and their vehicle broke down so they hitched a lift. AIBU to think this is an irresponsible thing to put in a childrens book?

I presume there were adult characters in the story - driving the car. Or - God forbid- were children driving cars ????!!!

We hitched everywhere in the 70s.....do you think the risk has gone up or the perception of risk has gone up?

FrostyTheCrunchyFrog · 07/12/2011 09:30

Whatmeworry, I think it's riskier. For women, anyway.

Or actually, I have more to lose - being a mum and all - so it would be selfish to hitch now. I think.

I was a regular hitcher in the early 90s, more or less daily in fact. I loved the freedom. Used to hitch to school quite a lot!

My DD 4.11 has just moved on to stage 2 of Oxford reading tree, the first line of her new book is : Kim had a cat, Jim had a dog. What books are your Dd reading?

What is actually wrong with hitching?

I done it many times, and given many lifts. Sadly these days you see very few people asking for lifts.

My experiences hitching have often been life-afirming, meeting interesting people and livening boring journeys.

Plus it saves money and is better for the environment.

I would love to see some statistics backing up the perception that it is a dangerous activity (or at least more so than being in a car normally).
