we were talking about Christmas and it has been a tough year so I was trying to prepare her for the fact that there won't be as much under the Christmas tree this year

she said

it doesn't matter, Christmas isn't about the presents it's about spending time with the people you love -I don't need lots of things, I'll just be happy spending the day with you and grandma and everyone else

sniff sniff sniff

when did she get so grown up?

What a sweetie.

And she's absolutely right, of course.

Ah, she's so lovely, it's so nice when you have those few and far between rewarding moments in parenting. It's good she's got realistic expectations too, you'll have a lovely time.

manicinsomniac · 05/12/2011 23:01

Awww, that's cute.

I thought I was getting a similar comment from my 9 year old when I asked her what she wanted for Christmas the other day.

She said - "I don't need anything thank you". I thought that was lovely until she followed it up with "X, Y and Z have much better toys than me and they let me play with them all the time." Xmas Hmm

ChristinedePizanne · 05/12/2011 23:05

Aww that's lovely :)

Another mum told me something at school pick up today which nearly made me cry. She and her DP took their DS (5) to the Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park on Saturday and had told him that Father Xmas wanted to see him to because he had something to tell him so DS was very excited.

When they got there though, the wait was 2 hours to see Father Xmas so she said she would queue, and her DS and his dad could go off and enjoy themselves and she'd ring when she was at the front of the queue. Her DS turned round and said that Father Xmas would just have to wait and tell him another time because they had come to have a day out as a family and it wasn't fair if she was spending all that time queuing.

I really did well up in the playground Blush

That's lovely.
My DD can be sweet like that too - it really gets you! I can't remember what DP and I were talking about - but it was something we wanted but couldn't afford and DD in all seriousness said we could have all the money in her money box towards it. This is the money box that Granny (mostly) fills with spare change and when it's full, DD gets to choose a new toy - so it's a kind thing to offer to give it up for something boring like a new hob!

Bossybritches22 · 05/12/2011 23:09

I did the same "don't expect much" speech to my DD's & DD1 said

"That's Ok Mum , a large bar of choccie & a few books & I'll be happy!!"

She would too......sniffle

perfumedlife · 05/12/2011 23:13
