I live in a very very remote farmhouse in the welsh hills... Loads of out buildings/boogey man houses dotted around...
There's a huge woods near by and we spotted a dead sheep there, so told our landlady...
She said to us a few days latter "we'd better go and find that dead sheep to see if it's one from the farm"
When we got to the sheep there was sticks made into crucifixes and little blair witch style stick men hanging from the trees.
Turns out my landlady had snuck up to our farm in the night and found it and decorated it in a bid to make us scared of the "cult" in the woods... Turns out she scared herself half to death.
Love my landlady, she's crazy :)

I was at my mums at 3am yesterday morning - my mattress went up! So NO YANBU! Now I'm awake because I'm too scared of living alone now :(

Yes I'm a sad grown woman who is scared to be alone at night Blush

I used to be absolutely fine with being alone, but since being with my DP I notice every little sound and when I hear something I watch the door like a hawk thinking someone is going to break in. I've had these wild imaginary fights with burglars countless times in my head :D

When he's not here, I mean. I'm not that crazy all the time

I used to be absolutely petrified of being home alone through the night, to the point where I would lock my bedroom door and bring a bowl in, in case I had to wee in the night and was too afraid to go out to the bathroom.
Having realised that this is basically crazy-lady behaviour, I did the following:

  • Got a very robust new front door with banham locks. No one is getting through that baby
  • Spoke to friend who works in Met Police about a) preventing burglary and b) what to do if you wake up and an intruder is in your home.
His advice: a) To prevent a burglary, lock all doors and windows as most burglars are opportunistic and are looking for very easy entry routes, usually windows that are not only unlocked but open. Leave a light on overnight and make sure the front of your house is well lit. b) If you wake up and someone is in your home (even typing that makes me feel like I'm going to VOM) then it is much worse for them than it is for you. Burglars want nice quiet EMPTY houses. So you need to make an enormous noise. Do not approach them (ha ha as if) but shout "I have called the police and they are on their way please get out of my house" very loudly. Switch your bedroom light on and barricade the door if you can. They will get out very very fast. Most burglars are looking for cash or items that could be easily sold like ipads and jewellery or car keys to take the car from the drive. They do not want to hurt anyone as that would mean convictions for GBH.

Bogeymen, on the other hand, I cannot help with.
