...to think In the Night Garden is a pile of shit?

telly was on in the background and I've just seen how awful it is. No proper spoken word from any character, they all have stupid names and IMO seem rather mentally deficient.

And the sense of scale is all wrong.

And some of the names sound like perverse sexual practices.

Another thing that concerns me about ITNG is Macca Pacca going to bed with his favourite stone. Can his parents/carers not afford a teddy?

ConOfScience · 04/12/2011 21:52

DD loves ITNG & Waybuloo, Bring on bedtime hour every evening so I can come on MN

But I'm not ashamed to say that I would do things to Mr Bloom.

Miette · 04/12/2011 21:54

The music at the end before the credits start rolling is beautiful. I like the way the birds on the tree sing off key and I like Derek Jacobi's voice. Not seen it for a while though as my daughters have grown out of it.

SardineQueen · 04/12/2011 21:57

sibling the ninkynonk is a bit naughty and goes too fast sometimes, through the hedge and up the trees. People riding on the ninkynonk can get their food mixed up or get a blanket on their head and all sorts of japes.

The pinky ponk is more stately and not entirely my cup of pinky ponk juice tea if I'm honest

We watch it because it actually calms our 2 yo boy down. I still can't decide if it's complete bollocks or utter genius....

kirrinIsland · 04/12/2011 23:01

I'm quite new to it - does anyone actually ever ride in the last part of the ninky nonk? I've seen them all ride in it and they always sit in the same places, so who's the last carriage for? sucked in

PrettyCandlesAndTinselToo · 04/12/2011 23:32

Beatrix Potter can be quite gruesome and aggressive. I had to veto most of the stories for ds1 and dd because they were getting upset and bewildered. Dd has only enjoyed them this year, age 8.

tigerlillyd02 · 05/12/2011 02:26

DS doesn't seem to gain anything at all from it - no speech picked up, no singing songs and no dancing on his part - and it bores me to tears so we don't watch it.

We're a Mr Tumble household Grin

TheSkiingGardener · 05/12/2011 06:40

The last carriage is for IgglePiggle when he rides on his own kirrin.

I'm very sad that I know that.

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 05/12/2011 06:55

DD has never been that wild about the programme itself, never really sat and watched it. But she loved the music in the car and now at 3.10 years still adores playing with her ITNG toys and we've been to the live show two years running and she wants to go again. What's that about?

Red2011 · 05/12/2011 14:09

As soon as DD is reading we'll be on Grimms' fairy tales. I try to limit viewing of ITNG but sadly it does seem to hold an attraction for her and it is on just as I'm getting dinner prepared/ things ready for her to go to bed.

BTW, I hate Mickey Mouse with a passion. He reminds me of Michael Jackson, and Mr Hanky the Christmas Poo. But Mr Hanky is far more my kind of thing. Sadly.

I love it (luckily my 2.5 year old son does too :).

Everyone is happy.

There are a lot of interesting colours.

There are a lot of interesting creatures with names to learn...and toddlers love learning lists. I know that they are not "real" and you may call it pointless learning but I don't think the brain has a limited capacity to store things and it is the process of learning that is important.

It is interesting musically. The birds are all represented by different instruments and there are a lot of harmonies (and disharmonies) to think about.

There are a lot of simple poetic forms and rhymes within it. It is a great introduction to poetry.

There is a nice symmetry to sailing to the garden across an ocean and sailing away again into the night.

GrimmaTheNome · 05/12/2011 14:29

I've never seen it (DD too old) but those of you who think it is shit can secretly call it 'In the Nightsoil Garden' and snigger. (well, it'd make me feel better in such circs)

BamBam21 · 05/12/2011 14:31

Oh I love ITNG!

My DS turned 8 yesterday, so has long since grown out of it, but he loved it up until he was about 4.5. His favourite bit was when they all dance to the carousel at the end, and we all had to get up to dance too.Xmas Smile It's just lovely and innocent, and I well up a bit whenever I hear the theme tune as it brings back lovely memories.

DC2 due in Feb, so hope that they will love it too. Xmas Smile

ReshapeWhileDamp · 05/12/2011 14:31

YABU. I want to live there. Macca Pacca, Iggle Piggle and ESPECIALLY Upsy Bloody Daisy would have to fuck off though. I want peace.

katkouta · 05/12/2011 16:37

ha! Im currently in Egypt watching it in Arabic. They have different names here..

Igglepiggle is.... zhoo zhooo
Upsy Daisy is ....Rayhanna
Makka Pakka is....Nazeef!

Do you prefer those names ? Grin

MorelliOrRanger · 05/12/2011 16:41

YANBU - I frigging hate it.

HeidiKat · 05/12/2011 16:41

Well Rayhanna seems apt, Upsy Daisy reminds me of Rihanna with all her knicker flashing, put it away love.

Motherofhobbit · 05/12/2011 20:09

I think it's quite sweet and DS loves it. The Haahoos give me the willies though - especially the yellow cross one - much too big and smiley. >>shudder

TCOB · 05/12/2011 20:11

YABU. I fucking love it big time. DD doesn't mind it either.

OneUp · 24/11/2013 16:16

I actually love it :) does that make me sad. My DD is just getting into it now and I think it's really lovely.

Apart from Upsy Daisy. I hate Upsy Daisy with a passion.
