child sponsorship abroad

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place for this but I didn't really know where to post this.

I was just wondering of anyone had experiences of sponsoring a child abroad? There are quite a few different charities that do this and I wanted to know if anyone had used any of them. Also, am I being unreasonable to want something back for the sponsorship...such as letters and updates from the child?

Please go easy on me - I'm in a fragile place right now as this quest has been triggered by the fact that I am booked in for a termination this week and I want to mark this loss by giving to another child :(

I sponsor a chil through plan international, you grt lts of feedbak about your child and the area they live in. I've had a few drawings from mine over the years Smile you also have the chance to write regularly to your child and also send birthday gift, xmas pressie etc, some sponsors have even een to their sponsored child country and met their child and their family.

I think its very rewarding and you should definitely go for it.

Hope you are ok and are able to draw some comfort from doing this. I've been meaning to sign up to sponsor a child for ages and your thread has given me a kick up the arse to actually get on with it.

Hi I have sponsored with Action Aid for a number of years. I work in this sector and they are a good charity. I paid £15 a month and extra at Christmas etc. to provide extra bits for their village.

I sponsored a 13 year old girl and received letters and drawing. Please do note that your money will never DIRECTLY go that child - but support the family network she is a part of. This is only as it stops jealousy or upset if some children receive more donations than others etc. The money still goes to the small community of children and their families for education and hygiene products.

At Christmas I would always buy a goat too.

I did exactly the same after my termination several years ago - I sponsored a little girl in Laos who has just hit 18 and I had a lovely letter to say thank you. It really helped me come to terms with what I’d had to do.
