To ask whether you go for quality or quantity with clothes?

Nice lighthearted topic for a Saturday night!

I've always been one to go for quantity rather than quality but I'm now trying to buy things less often but buy more expensive, better quality clothes that will hopefully last a lot longer. I've found in recent years that clothes from cheaper shops often mean you buy cheap, you buy twice.

I still buy reasonably priced clothes for the DCs though, from George at Asda or sometimes Tesco or Peacocks.

So out of pure nosiness, which do you do and where do you shop?

I can't afford good quality stuff, so I just buy from Sainsburys and recycle them when I get bored or they start to look overwashed. I only buy a few things and tend to wear them over and over again.

cocoachanneloffestivecheer · 03/12/2011 20:56

I go through stages of each. Sometimes I thing, 'right I'm going to get some lovely, fairly expensive classic clothes'. Then I go mad on the High Street Blush

squeakytoy · 03/12/2011 20:57

a bit of both really..

for daytime stuff I am happy with cheap tshirts, trousers, leggings etc, that it doesnt matter if I get bleach on or any other damage.. but for going out I like to have decent quality items..

littlepie · 03/12/2011 20:58

I buy a fair amount of things from the local dress agency. So second hand= price of new cheap but much better quality (apart from the Mulberry handbag that I bought last week that certainly wasn't the price of high street!).

I'm a bigger lady and find that cheap clothes just look plain awful!

Bellavita · 03/12/2011 20:58

Always quality... Every time...

I find cheap does not last, false economy.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/12/2011 21:02

I don't buy really cheap clothes for ethical reasons and also cos I get really pissed off when they've been washed a couple of times and they're ruined. It's cost per wear for me.

I get equally annoyed at evening wear for the same reason.

I buy nearly everything in the sales or EBay. I bought a viv Westwood dress for 80 quid 2 weeks ago- worn it 6 times already, washed it 4 times - looks like new.

BleurghUna · 03/12/2011 21:02

Depends. Coats, handbags and shoes etc I would always go for quality because those things are on show so much. Other stuff doesn't matter so much, so I would buy cheaper stuff so that I have enuogh variety. I think fit is just as important as quality. You can get away with cheap clothes if they fit properly.
Price isn't always an indicator of quality either - I've had stuff from Monsoon that has fallen apart after a few washes, and other stuff from Primark that is still going strong after 5 years! And vice versa too.

Katy1368 · 03/12/2011 21:03

Me too quality every time nowadays - cheap stuff just rips apart at the seams if you are an, ahem, bigger busted lady like myself! I haven't bought anything for myself for months as am saving up for something designer at present. Not long now...

2nd hand quality here.

Bellavita · 03/12/2011 21:05

I have some nice stuff for work from Boden - started buying their clothes last spring.

I have a few things from French Connection - I always wear their jeans (dark blue straight legged - fabulous fit), Karen Millen, Coast, I have a lovely dress from Whistles, Zara, LK Bennett, Mint Velvet, Hobbs. I have also have a couple of things from TK Maxx which always get admired.

I try to buy a few good quality basics. Have a Basler overcoat (7 years old and in fantastic condition), a superb black trouser suit, a really nice LK Bennett deep blue skirt suit. Also have a couple of Autograph suits and recently bought a really well cut suit for £65.00 from M&S. Have quite a few Per Una and Boden pieces which I know you all hate but they are great for work. If we are going somewhere special I may buy something form Phase 8, LK Bennett or Whistles and recycle the pieces for years afterwards.

I have a weakness for shoes but although I might spend more than 100 on a pair have pairs that are 10 years old which I still wear (I buy 2/3 pairs a year and some are less than £50). I once worked out that including hair, makeup and clothes I spend about £200 pcm on myself. Almost everything I buy lasts for ages and on a cost per wear basis I think is very good value. Am wearing a Boden Coatigan today which I bought at the very beginning of 2009 and I think I have worn it at least once a week (often 3/4 times a week in the summer - esp. in 2009) since and although it cost £85.00 it has been worth its weight in gold.

Ribeno · 03/12/2011 21:07

I go for clothes from h & m, primark, dorothy perkins, new look and ASOS/ topshop for shoes. I am notorious for falling and scuffing jeans, ruining shoes and staining clothes. That's why I buy cheap clothes and shoes. I do however love my marc by marc jacobs and mulberry wallets!!!

AnotherMincepie · 03/12/2011 21:08

Neither! Just try to do the best I can with the money I have... fortunately my lifestyle doesn't call for anything glamorous!

HeidiKat · 03/12/2011 21:09

Mostly quantity for me, the majority of my stuff comes from primark or george at asda.

Neither; I wear MIL's cast-offs. Mainly Tesco's, I suspect.

southeastastra · 03/12/2011 21:14

use american apparel for t shirts and everyday tops so mid range

more for dresses, topshop's website is very addictive

at 42 i should grow up and head for phase 8 and white stuff, but their stuff is dullsville

Lynli · 03/12/2011 21:15

Either, Armarni to Asda, If I love it I buy it. If I don't I don't. I have wasted so much money over the years on things I didn't ever wear.

WowOoo · 03/12/2011 21:18

I'd prefer quality.
I'm wearing a jumper I bought in a Nicole Farhi sale 17 yrs ago...And it still looks good..ish! It was heavily reduced and this is what I try to go for if i have spare cash to spend on myself.

Cheap as chips for the children apart from special items - coats, trousers that will grow into, special event things etc.

I used to be able to afford nicer clothes. Now i can't but I think you can get great basics and good stuff from High st.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 03/12/2011 21:19

Quality here too, although I top up with cheap things from sainsbury's and currently love their skinny jeans.

White company and Phase 8 are my favourites atm.

Cost per wear is a good marker. I bought a very expensive cardicoat from Pure 3 winters ago and I must have worn it 500 times by now, which is about 30 pence per wear. Bargain!

TartyMcFarty · 03/12/2011 21:19

I never buy cheap, but I don't buy designer either. Monsoon is a bit of a staple. IMO, unless you are of the clothes-horse build (I have a cousin like this who looks great in H&M for example) cheap clothes really do look cheap.

I never buy at full price though, and rarely sale either. I tend to look for mid-season special offers and discount codes - there are loads around now.

orienteerer · 03/12/2011 21:19

Depends...
