To once again feel embarrassed to be from Norfolk ?

i have been watching 'come dine with me' this week, never seen it before but its filmed in Norwich and I used to work with someone who was on it.

I was born in Norwich to parents from London and have lived here all my life, have always detested the way Norfolk people speak (i actaully dont mean to cause offense, its just my opinion, and obviously not one i go around sharing, its just my 'thing' as it were), its always cringeworthy when someone from Norfolk is being interviewed on tv/radio as it seems that the slowest speaking, thickest accented people are always chosen, almost complete with their tractor and all other stereotypes.

I travel around for my job and noone ever thinks im from Norfolk, which always pleases me (yeah, maybe shallow). Anyway my point is: that bloody chip shop woman makes me ashamed to be from norfolk, she didnt help herslef by coming across as so ignorant 'i dont eat none of that foreign muck' etc etc, and eating a meal before going to someones house becuase she couldnt read the menu ????

In her defense, the other 4 people on the program with her were very educated, non accented people who she kept saying she wasnt comfortable with, and i presume that some dodgy editing had taken place - but even so....... Rant over, she just annoyed me, ive been thinking this all week and now i dont seem to be able to make a concise point. Sorry.

I agree with Orm

The other's were far more up their own arses on this weeks CDWM -err the woman with the post it notes of words on her bedroom wall which included the 'cunctator'? Or maybe the dull twit of a dj that was channeling Alan Partridge?.

I'm don't have a broad accent but have family members that do,it doesn't make them thick or ignorant.

Hahaha, you think you are 'superior' because you've not picked up the accent of the place you live.

On behalf of Narrrfaaalk, please feel free to fuck off.

I like the majority of regional accents and wouldn't think to correlate a person's intelligence with their accent.

However, if the grammar is incorrect then yes, it would grate on me and I would probably assume a person was less well educated (not necessarily less intelligent)

I don't think any accent requires poor grammar. Grammar shouldn't vary; if you're using the same noun/verb as the rest of the country then put it with the correct verb/pronoun etc for goodness sake. Dialect, to me, is regional vocabulary not incorrect grammar.

I cringe when I hear things like, "I were out on Saturday night and me and me mates was dead drunk." or "I love it when you does that" They could be said in any accent and have nothing to do with dialect, they're just wrong!

Funiily enough DS1 and I were having this discussion on Saturday. Walking into town we came across the unedifying sight of a mum with a young DD having a bit of a meltdown on the pavement. Mum was using her mobile so obviously couldn't directly deal with said child Hmmbut contented her self with yelling 'Get eeeerr!" at her child in increasing volume and irritation. I made a comment to DS and he called me a snob - I replied I would have equally hated it if she had said 'Tarquin, get hyar!' in ringing RP! What is said and intonation matters more than accent.

silly OP, who gives 2 fucks what people think and do you really think CDWM is a accurate photo on society
