Food poisoning and bf (tmi?)

MrsS1980 · 01/12/2011 11:21

I have been up most of the night with d and v - suspected food poisoning. My DS is ebf and this brought a dilemma. He was awake and hungry. I don't express and so had to feed him. Could this have put him in danger of getting sick too? My dh was a bit cross (to be fair it was 4am and he had to be up for work at 6) because he felt there was nothing he could do to help.
So, I guess I have 2 questions -

  1. is it ok to bf if you are sick
  2. aibu to not express?

Thanks

I couldn't express. I'd ring your GP for advice as I'm not sure. However, I was poorly when BF'ing and carried on, he didn't get ill, but I didn't have food poisoning so not sure what the party line is on that.

Certainly consult a medical professional, NHS direct? (Does that still exist?)

GrateHits · 01/12/2011 11:23

Carry on with the breastfeeding as usual Kellymom has the answers, as always

Make sure you are taking plenty of fluids.
Better in breast and bottlefeeding than AIBU

WowOoo · 01/12/2011 11:23

Don't think it can pass to the baby through your milk. But, you'll be very de hydrated.

Much easier not to express. yanbu.

get well soon!

WowOoo · 01/12/2011 11:25

Meant to add I was advised in same situation to give a little water to ds if that helps and if you feel your supply is lower than usual.

HairyGrotter · 01/12/2011 11:28

Carry on through, I had several D & V attacks, along with food poisoning (I've a terrible stomach lol) and DD was ebf. She was fine.

Keep yourself hydrated at all times, don't neglect that!

caramelgirl · 01/12/2011 11:32

Yyyy, prob safer not to express for risk of contamination. Just obsessively wash hands.
I have not very happy memories of putting feeding baby down, dashing to loo to puke, washing hands alot and settling back down to feed. She was fine, if a bit cross re breaks!
Keep nearby a bottle of water- with dioralyte in or a pinch ofsugar/ salt would also do or dash of juice (pref not orange as can irritate guts more). And when breaking latch obv don't suck finger first etc.
Tbf tho' my DD was 3.5 m by then, is your DS v tiny still? Might be worth asking doctor if so.
Get well soon

worldgonecrazy · 01/12/2011 11:32

Your LO will be fine, you cannot pass anything on through breastmilk, and if the worst happened and your LO did get sick then breastfeeding is the best way to make him well again.

I had a terrible D&V when DD was about 6 weeks old. I managed to express but only because I was too weak to hold her to feed her. We got through it. Though both DH and I were very poorly, DD was absolutely fine.

caramelgirl · 01/12/2011 11:36

Oh and when my bro' was 11 mo and almost weaned, he was v v sick. Doctor told my Ma only to give him boiled water or breast milk as it is super sterile. He warned even against formula ( tho' this was in the '80s). Luckily she was still feeding him once a day so went back to full on feeding- she is still a bit bitter re resulting saggy/ flat breasts but v glad he is alive and well.

Point being that, afaik, breast milk is seen as sterile and can't pass many lurgis on at all (HIV/ hepA only??)

TeWiharaMeriKirihimete · 01/12/2011 11:42

I actually didn't think about this at all...

Anyway, I got food poisoning when DD was around 7/8mths old, she was still predominantly bf, which I kept doing, just lying down on the sofa while I got over the worst of it. She was absolutely fine and showed no symptoms of food poisoning. (DH got it too and bless poor DD she just spent 2 weeks sitting on the floor on her own in front of disney films while DH and I lounged on the sofa with buckets)

Hope you feel better soon OP!

4madboys · 01/12/2011 11:46

its fine i had food poisoning when ds1 was about 3mths i was up all night going to the loo (liquid poo) and vomiting and feeding ds1 who fed loads. dp also caught the bug and was very ill, we both felt like death, ds1 however was fine and just fed him as normal :)

hope you feel better soon.

try to drink and keep your fluid levels up so you dont get dehydrated, as you will feel worse if you get dehydrated, just little sips often if you cant keep much down :)

MrsS1980 · 01/12/2011 12:00

Thank you so much. Ds doesn't seem to be as hungry as usual but he is 5 months and just coming out of a growth spurt so maybe a combination of that and him being more efficient.

Wonderful memories of Breastfeeding with a bucket beside me (just incase lol) and rushing to the loo every 5 mins, best advise ever has to be from Midwife, continue to breastfeed, but try to avoid touching the baby Hmm

As said before keep your fluids up and wash hands and Ds will be fine :)

Greatdomestic · 01/12/2011 12:50

similar to 4madboys.

I had dreadful fp or bug when dd was about 5 months old and ebf. My dh brought her in to the room for feeds and then whisked her away. She was absolutely fine.

biddysmama · 01/12/2011 14:36

carry on breastfeeding, if its food poisoning you cant pass it onthrough the milk, if its a bug baby will have some of your antibodies from the milk to help fighht it

mousysantamouse · 01/12/2011 14:42

don't worry and carry on. your supply might go a bit down due to you beeing sick but it will pick up again.
keep hydrated.
I had a bug when baby was 4m, spent the day in bed with a bucket with lid on one side and baby on the other. she didn't get sick.

TattyDevine · 01/12/2011 14:45

Gut bugs, whether food poisining or virus, live in the gut and don't pass out of the gut. Breastmilk is made from your blood, technically (bad as that sounds) so you'll be fine breastfeeding. As long as you don't puke on your baby Grin

ratspeaker · 01/12/2011 16:39

Make sure you wash your hands after every toilet visit

You should be producing some antibodies in your milk that will be passed to the baby giving some protection against whatever bug you've got

I got dysentry when my baby was weeks old, the pains were worse than being in labour! The wee one was fine though and I was able to continue ebf
