AIBU to not have advent calendars for my DC this year?

DC are 15 and 17. They are mortified that they have no advent calendar this year. The problem is that we had an arms war and each year the calendars became more elaborate - it all started with chocolate calendars, escalated to Playmobil calendars (you build a charming winter scene) and last year I surpassed myself with a several hundred pound effort including earrings, USB sticks, lipsticks, Calvin Klein knickers, perfume - basically anything small enough to fit into the pockets of our reusable fabric Christmas advent calendar (it's quite a challenge).

So AIBU to call a halt to it before I go bankrupt? Or am I a mean spirited Grinch?

(And I haven't started their stockings either)

OP, what utterly minging advent calendars you give, they're only fit for the servants. Your DC were quite right to throw wobblers. Who do you want them to be, Cinderella?

My first year at Uni I was so touched when my mum sent me a lovely Advent calendar. Until I got home and found out my sister had a chocolate one (we were never allowed chocolate, had to be v v tasteful and in fact my mum had a rule that the pictures underneath had to make sense with the picture on top. She must have spent weeks hunting for the right one). Anyway, I digress, but the point is Advent calendars are deeply nostalgic things so yabu not to do one at all but it doesn't need to be fancy. I tried putting little presents in my kids' re-useable one last year and they just looked at me and said 'where's the chocolate??'
