to think the school should not have cancelled the Christmas concert

my sons school has cancelled the Christmas concert because some parent or parents have objected, from what the class teacher has told me the objection was based around Christmas being a Christian thing and they did not want their child to participate. I have got to be honest and say this has left me fuming when earlier this term Diwali was celebrated in class. I am not overly religious far from it at best I could be described as a non practising Christian, when I was a child my parents were very open about religion and I attended the Anglican church, the Hindu temple, the Catholic church and occasionaly the mosque with my neighbour.
Would I be wrong to complain to the school about this. My son is deeply disappointed, and I feel it is entirely the wrong thing to do.

Yes I think you would be justified in asking exactly what the reasons were.

lisad123 · 29/11/2011 08:08

That's horrible those poor children Sad they Have likely worked hard on that.
We don't do Xmas, and so my kids don't join in, but would never stop anyone else's children or complain to school.
It's my choice to be my religion and my choice to send my children to school which celebrates Xmas as their main religious event, and my choice for them not to join in. BUT every parent should have a choice to opt in or out but not to demand they all make the same choice or be forced to Angry

shinybaubles · 29/11/2011 08:08

My son says he's not allowed to mention Jesus. I also should say that it is still being printed in the childrens agendas that the Christmas concert rehersals are going ahead, and the parents have not been informed.

I have asked well dh has this morning and the teacher said a parent/s had complained and she was not allowed to talk about or mention Jesus in class.
I totally understand that some children may not be allowed by their parents to participate but surely a substitute acitvity could have been organised for them.
Also since it it not a faith school if they celebrate/teach about one religion ie hinduism then they should celebrate and talk about all faiths Christianity, Islam , etc.

Not allowed to mention Jesus?

I don't believe it, are you a troll or a Daily Fail journo?

CarolCervix · 29/11/2011 08:15

Bollocks.

I am afraid I just don't believe you and this sounds just like an extension of the vile racist FB statuses which crop up around now.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/11/2011 08:18

There is NO way that she is 'not allowed' to mention Jesus Hmm

He is a major prophet in Islam and a figure in other religions.

Do you have a spectacularly militant anti- spirituality parent at your school - who is against ALL religion and who has somehow managed to get heard???

PaintYouByNumbers · 29/11/2011 08:18

yanbu, i hate that this sort of thing keeps happening. There is nothing to gain by ignoring religions. I mean, they are still there aren't they?

LaurieFairyCake · 29/11/2011 08:20

I hate threads like these as it's usually some anti Muslim bullshit by someone too FUCKING STUPID to realise that Jesus is a major prophet in Islam and an observant Muslim parent would never intervene like this.

shinybaubles · 29/11/2011 08:20

I have been on mumsnet for years am no troll and find it offensive you would say so just because you don't believe me.

Surely covering all religions, including Christianity is in the National Curriculum. It would be impossible not to refer to Jesus, as part of the curriculum. I've never heard of a school banning a Christmas Nativity or other performance based on one parent complaining.

I'm also struggling to believe this story.

shinybaubles · 29/11/2011 08:22

I am not anti islam or any other religion far from it, this has really happened my son has been saying this since last week and to be honest I thought he has whatever was happening totally confused so asked dh to find out when he dropped it him there this morning.
What I wanted was some help in writing a letter of complain to the school.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/11/2011 08:22

shiny - not disbelieving you but (kindly) you have the wrong end of the stick or someone has.

Go and find out - before the Daily Mail read this and make up some bullshit about it.

lisad123 · 29/11/2011 08:23

Not being able to mention Jesus?? Hmm

shinybaubles · 29/11/2011 08:24

My son is in an international private school , in Antwerp Belgium. Surely you can check my previous posts all I wanted was some help and an informed debate so I know what I am saying when I speak to the school.

OP posts:
shinybaubles · 29/11/2011 08:25

I don't have the wrong end of the stick - Angry Sad

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 29/11/2011 08:25

Ok - I'm going to guess what end of the stick your son has got wrong - not mentioning Jesus is not true - not mentioning him AS the son of God - possibly.

There is no way the nativity story has been outlawed unless the school had played fast and loose with it and they were all singing "JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD" and someone complained

Wormshuffler · 29/11/2011 08:26

The OP has been on here for years, if this is indeed true then it needs to be publicised, be that in the daily witch-hunt or some other means.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/11/2011 08:27

Sorry - x-posts

Didn't realise you were abroad - different rules obviously. It wouldn't happen here.

Feel free to complain -it wouldn't happen here so can't help you, no idea what influence you have over schools in Belgium.

shinybaubles · 29/11/2011 08:27

Mumsnet has been a huge help while we have been stuck living in Belgium and I have come in many times for help and advice but I see you have to be a regular poster on AIBU to get any help or to be taken seriously.
While I am happy to say my son may have gotten the wrong end of the stick there is nothing wrong with my husbands hearing or his comprehension of the English Language.

Wormshuffler · 29/11/2011 08:27

Cross-posted, at an international school in belgium you may have to suck it up I'm afraid OP. I don't blame you for being Angry

shinybaubles · 29/11/2011 08:29

It is true and I don't want a witch hunt - I want some help drafting a letter to the school because I am feeling perhaps unreasonabley emotional about the situation.

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 29/11/2011 08:29

I don't blame you for being Angry either

Come home Wink - it wouldn't happen here, more tolerance.

shinybaubles · 29/11/2011 08:30

I have no one here to talk to or discuss it with, and I feel the issue needs addressing, not just for the cancelling of the concert, but also the fact that the school has not notified the parents.

OP posts:
shinybaubles · 29/11/2011 08:32

I do want to come home I hate living here but that's a whole other issue. I get it you all think I am not telling the truth or just trying to cause trouble but that's not the case.
