To be irritated by expectant mothers who think they're going to give birth to the next Einstein/Nadal/Oxford-Cambridge genius

No one ever thinks, 'well I hope my child will be average but happy'

It's all 'well, he might be a Wimbledon star', or 'the scan showed he/she is very active and alert looking'

I know we all do a bit of this but first time mothers are the worst offenders Grin

Is there a name for this syndrome? Pre-natal-delusions-of-grandeur?

Why would you "hope" your child will be average? You might accept they are average, but you hope for wonderful things for your children. I think the syndrome is called "parenthood"?

Well as a first time expectant mother the only things I hope for at the minute is health, safe arrival and to hurry the hell up Wink

Irritated perhaps but unrealistic!

Hoping their child might have some particular talent isn't the same as "thinking they're going to" be something that specific, is it? I doubt many people think their child is going to be Einstein/Nadal etc, but surely we all hope they'll be an interesting and unique individual with a range of interests and talents? We wouldn't be choosing to create a whole new person just to churn out drones....

Maybe their baby will be the next Einstein/Nadal/Oxbridge genius - someone has to be!

Pagwatch · 28/11/2011 17:10

I wouldn't ever have wished my child was Einstein. Do you want a socially awkward child who talks very late?

I wanted a happy average child. But that is experience for you.

Expectant mothers are just wanting what they see as the best outcome. Irritating but I would let it go. It is understandable.

I remember planning to be a great mum which meant no tv . Hahahahahahaha.

I'd take average and happy any day, over tortured genius any day actually neuromantic.
