To think that pushchairs should have same priority as wheelchairs on buses?

Today - packed bus, I was in the pushchair bit on the bus, another mum got on with a buggy loaded with shopping. People sat in space that could have held another buggy in it didn't get up so both our pushchairs had to go in one space and my pushchair is one of those big all-terrain things! Then bus driver stopped bus for wheelchair user and asked us if either of us could fold down our pushchairs/move? Well, first of all, there wouldn't have been any room for us to sit down with our babies and also have our shopping on our knee or even stored on luggage shelf once pushchairs were on. Also the bus service I travel on has a bus every 4 minutes in the daytime. So the bus driver (who obviously has to be sen to be doing the right thing) got off the bus to tell the wheelchair user that the bus was full, and would he mind waiting for the next one, which he didn't anyway. What does everyone else think? Should we mums with our pushchairs be given the same priority as wheelchairs? Should bus drivers ask other passengers to move so that we can get on, instead of (sometimes) feeling like we are an annoyance and an obstacle to them?

Not

If I could sit anywhere yes hello 32 spaces on a bus 1 wheelchair space ( nit pram space ) the odds are against me for a start

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:45

You been kn one so it's temporary try it every day

crashdoll · 07/03/2012 17:46

But no one has to get off the bus, that's the point! Buggies can be folded, they're magic you see! Wink

NotaStatistic · 07/03/2012 17:46

Get a taxi

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:47

Hehe we was coming through paddington while back and people grumbled refused to move their luggage from the one disabled space on a train

The transport police were at station anyway as major delays

He said you have 2 mins to move it or were just offload it

KalSkirata · 07/03/2012 17:47

here its often one accessible bus per hour. How long should the wheelchair user wait so some entitled parent who could fold the fucking buggy hogs the wheelchair space. With folding both can be on the bus.
Having a baby is not a fucking disability. Sissies.

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:47

Lol sorry no accessibile taxis in my town

Not all buggies can be folded if the bus is busy and there is no where to store it what would you do

crashdoll · 07/03/2012 17:47

I'm partially angry but more amused than anything. I thank God that I may be disabled (fortunately, am able to walk at this point in time) but at least I'm not ignorant and selfish.

KalSkirata · 07/03/2012 17:48

taxi Statistic? £15 each way to town. you offering to pay?

Buy a foldable buggy. A baby can be removed from a buggy. An adult in a wheelchair cannot. I did offer to let thehumancatapult sit on my lap though!

NotaStatistic · 07/03/2012 17:48

I find that hard to believe humancatapult

dottyspotty2 · 07/03/2012 17:48

Sorry that was to notastatistic

KalSkirata · 07/03/2012 17:49

what did people do 10 years aho statistic. Before disabled campaigners had won spaces on the bus?
Oh wait, they werent all helpless selfish cunts and folded the buggy....

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:49

And let's face it most towns don't have them try doing your research

I drive a power chair it does not fold it does not go in a nice little car or a taxi

It does not like the small ramps accessible cars tend to use

dottyspotty2 · 07/03/2012 17:49

If you use buses get a bleeding buggy that is easy to fold christ its easy

crashdoll · 07/03/2012 17:50

Why should she have to get a blimmin' taxi? YOU get a taxi as you seemingly can't manage.

ComposHat · 07/03/2012 17:50

I hate the underlying assumption that the wheelchair user has all day to sit around waiting for a bus. What if that is their bus to work, because shock horror, wheelchair users do work.

ClothesOfSand · 07/03/2012 17:50

The solution to this that is people want their luggage to have the same rights as a person, they should pay an adult fare for luggage.

Non-folding pushchairs should be charged adult fare on the bus. Surely the reason under fives travel free on a bus is because they can sit on knees? If your luggage takes up somebody else's space, you should pay for it.

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:51

Believe wtf you like thankfully most people have understanding

I book my seat to travel 24 hrs in advance at least so if your luggage in my space it's going to be moved Either by staff or me

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:54

You want fair well turn up at your station 30 mins early oh and if your late bevause you missed the bus because some lady has her precipys baby in the space no gurantee that there let you on a train

SanctiMoanyArse · 07/03/2012 17:54

A baby is NOT disabled, don't be so bloody ludicrous! Disability is on a peer to peer level.

Not only should a wheelchair user get priority over the mobile (and as a parent you / we are an adult's legs) I have been known to occupy a pram seat WITH FULL AGREEMENT OF THE DRIVER because all other spaces have been full and non wheelchair using ds3 is very wobbly and could not ride stood up (autism). I only use a bus from park and ride or when essential mind, although we may have to ditch the car we use for the boys when disability money is cut and then will have to use them loads and I will not feel bad about keeping my gorgeous boy safe.

Mind I used to be able to fold a double buggy with a 10 week old and 17 month old after work

So suck on that for a lollipop. Even though on Mumsnet these days it's probably be a Heston Blumenthal lollipop- made of organic samphire and crushed snails. Or summat.

ClothesOfSand · 07/03/2012 17:54

Then luggage users could do the same as you HC. If they want to take a pushchair on the train, they should phone up 24 hours in advance and book it. And they should be charged extra for the train having to provide extra pushchair space, not think they can use the wheelchair space on the train.
