To think that pushchairs should have same priority as wheelchairs on buses?

SparklyC · 28/11/2011 14:31

Today - packed bus, I was in the pushchair bit on the bus, another mum got on with a buggy loaded with shopping. People sat in space that could have held another buggy in it didn't get up so both our pushchairs had to go in one space and my pushchair is one of those big all-terrain things! Then bus driver stopped bus for wheelchair user and asked us if either of us could fold down our pushchairs/move? Well, first of all, there wouldn't have been any room for us to sit down with our babies and also have our shopping on our knee or even stored on luggage shelf once pushchairs were on. Also the bus service I travel on has a bus every 4 minutes in the daytime. So the bus driver (who obviously has to be sen to be doing the right thing) got off the bus to tell the wheelchair user that the bus was full, and would he mind waiting for the next one, which he didn't anyway. What does everyone else think? Should we mums with our pushchairs be given the same priority as wheelchairs? Should bus drivers ask other passengers to move so that we can get on, instead of (sometimes) feeling like we are an annoyance and an obstacle to them?

People who think they have a right to use the wheelchair space (clue is in the name! It isn't the pushchair space!) when they're not using a wheelchair are twats. You probably don't think you're twats but you are utter and complete twats.

hmm
your baby will walk, and not be in a buggy forever, they are not disabled, they are just a baby.
a person in a wheelchair is disabled they can't walk...
it is easy

2shoes · 07/03/2012 17:17

crashdoll I like your style

Pagwatch · 07/03/2012 17:17

That is such nonsense it is hard to raise the enthusiasm to post a coherent reply.

If you think that being a baby is the same as being in a wheelchair I would suggest that you lack.........well a few things.

crashdoll · 07/03/2012 17:18

Thanks 2shoes Wink. I've had a stressful day and I'm not in the mood for beating around the bush.

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:18

Helen that space is for wheelchairs was a very long campaign to get it . So you should appreciate the fact most the time you can use undisturbed

Also prams fold wheelchairs dont and you can fold pram put baby on your lap and your arse pretty much on any seat you like . I can't

ledkr · 07/03/2012 17:18

A disabled passenger should take priority of the allocated seats but in the op it sounds as if there were able bodies people taking up the other space, why werent they asked to move?
I agree you should not be treated differently to others just because you have a baby but you also shouldnt be seen as a lower form of human life as you very often are when you use a bus. I have had to use the bus after each of my babies due to being unable to drive after a section,i wouldnt have been able to walk 4 miles and back either. That doesnt make me a bad or selfish person.
Live and let live.

buses have one wheelchair space only one, so a wheelchair uses should always be able to use it
wow can't believe people are so jealous of someone who can't walk.

this is an old thread so I am just going to use one of my old posts

LtEveDallas · 07/03/2012 17:19

so let me get this right disabled equals priority in all matters especially transport, cause they are in a wheelchair

Yes.

Helenfellows33 · 07/03/2012 17:19

my mother has been disabled for a while now and has a blue badge etc, she doesnt expect priority treatment if this sort of situation occured. kinda selfish to expect others to give priority just cause your disabled and their not.

MissAnnersley · 07/03/2012 17:20

This thread is depressing. I can't believe some of the things I'm reading.

A pushchair can be folded and a baby can be lifted up and put on your knee. A wheelchair user does not have that choice.

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:21

I would suggest they are lacking compassion , care , understanding and Braun cells

Hmm your baby going to grow up walk my legs never going to grow up or be cured one day

And sorry I can remember where you had to fold buggies al the time .

He'll I lived in a town of 10 thousand people where the buses ate not accessibile have steps on so all mums need to gold and funny enough they mange . Me It meant I could not go out full stop

crashdoll · 07/03/2012 17:22

It's not priority treatment. It's equal treatment. Able-bodied peeps have their seats and wheelchair uses have their space. Buggies can be folded, adults using wheelchairs cannot be folded and carried.

Pagwatch · 07/03/2012 17:22

I am collating items for my big book of thick posts.

I have a few nominees. It's getting exciting.

LtEveDallas · 07/03/2012 17:24

Is your mother in a wheelchair and having to use the bus Helen?

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:24

Helen depends on disability , and yes if it is 5 minute wait chances are I edit for next one but nit going to do if long wait

That or since you want mr treated the same I'm going to start demanding they move all seats so I can put my chair where ever I fancy

crashdoll · 07/03/2012 17:24

Next time I'm on a busy bus alongside a wheelchair user, I will suggest they fold their wheelchair and sit on my knee so the precious ickle babbies don't have to be roused from their peaceful slumber.

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:25

Personally tp make it fair maybe buses should have no seats .

2shoes · 07/03/2012 17:26

it is not priority, it is about using the one space on a whole bus that a WC uses can use,

crashdoll · 07/03/2012 17:26

Don't be so selfish, humancatapult. I'm sure you can bloody get out and sit on someone's knee! Smile

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:26

Lol crash my chair don't fold think I may squash you too

2shoes · 07/03/2012 17:27

TheHumancatapult but what a bout the tots that want to sit in a seat whilst their buggy sits empty, poor things would cry

ComposHat · 07/03/2012 17:28

kinda selfish to expect others to give priority just cause your disabled and their not

How does using the specially designated wheelchair area for wheelchairs constitute being selfish? It is the same as hogging a disabled loo whilst there's a wheelchair user outside.

The pushchair mafia will end up shooting themselves in the foot. Bus companies will end up refusing to carry unfolded pushchairs altogether if the abuse of the wheelchair area persists.

Which will benefit nobody.

KalSkirata · 07/03/2012 17:29

its a wheelchair space.
Fold your fucking buggy.

TheHumancatapult · 07/03/2012 17:29

Oo font forget it should be accompanied by praise the lord I'm all of a suddern cured
