AIBU to be shocked by Michael Gove's comment about childcare?

Just listened to Michael Gove's comment that 'Mothers' should not have to 'give up a days work or pay for expensive childcare' during the strikes this week. Am I being unreasonable to be totally shocked that he thinks childcare responsibilities only fall to the Mother in the house?

To be honest, I don't think I would be surprised at anything Gove says ... Unless he suddenly starts talking sense.

KateMiddIeton · 28/11/2011 14:12

YABU to be shocked by anything that twat says that is misogynistic, chauvinistic, patronising or just plain stupid.

GypsyMoth · 28/11/2011 14:12

I'm not surprised at all!!

CailinDana · 28/11/2011 14:14

Isn't it Tory policy that all mothers should stay at home as long as they don't claim benefits?

Kayano · 28/11/2011 14:16

I hate that chinless man

TheSecretCervix · 28/11/2011 14:18

Lol! I guess you are right I suppose I am not shocked that he may privately think that (along with most of the Tory cabinet I would imagine!) but the fact that it was said in a pre-written speech that presumably someone vetted. Guess I just didn't expect the misogyny to be quite so blatant!

YANBU to be nauseated. YABU to be shocked as almost everything he spews forth is right wing tosh.

I love the way he's trying to make out that public sector workers are somehow working against mothers. Er, surely a huge proportion of public sector workers (teachers, doctors, nurses etc) ARE mothers. Let alone the fact that in Gove's world men need never take a day off work. Amazing how many virgin births he thinks are taking place in this country.

ViviPru · 28/11/2011 14:21

When I heard that soundbite I thought to myself "I bet there'll be an AIBU about that." True story. The scariest conclusion to draw from this is how much AIBU appears to be pervading my thoughts Confused

KatAndKit · 28/11/2011 14:22

YABU as you should know by now that he is a total and complete moron.

Don't you just love the way that by thinking they are taking the side of the female voters, all they are doing is making themselves look even more sexist than usual? I found it quite ironic. Bunch of tory wankers.

MsVestibule · 28/11/2011 14:25

TBH, Secret, I don't see what your issue is. If it's not the mother's problem to sort out childcare for her DCs, whose is it Confused.

Oh, hang on. You're not seriously suggesting that the fathers should take some responsibility???

TroublesomeEx · 28/11/2011 14:27

He's a knob.

I don't think I've ever said that before about anyone, so here goes again.

He's a knob.

academyblues · 28/11/2011 14:34

I think he's a knob with knobs on.

Really. He's an absolute excuse for a human being who is merrily about to sell off both our NHS and education system.

montmartre · 28/11/2011 14:36

I just read this on the BBC!

V pleased I'm not his wife tosser.

Cherrypi · 28/11/2011 14:41

This rankled me when I heard it on the radio too. Suprised no one commented on it on the show immediately. Such a throwback comment.

porcamiseria · 28/11/2011 14:42

erm, it will probably will be the mothers though, it most uslally is I am afarid

stopcomplainingthen · 28/11/2011 14:43

I think he said it mainly because the mantra in support of the strikers keeps focusing on the fact that it's mothers feeling the impact of the proposed changes. So he answers that by saying it's harming mothers.

Not saying it's right, but I think this is why he's said it.

FlyingStart · 28/11/2011 14:43

YANBU.

I am married to a man who thinks like Mr Gove.

I am self-employed and my husband in an employee of a large company. However, guess who is expected to cover childcare during periods of sickness and strikes? Yep, the self-employed female, me.

However, thanks to that mind-set, as from next week, I am out of work. Long story but the consequences (that is, single income for Christmas) are only begining to hit my husband.

fickencharmer · 28/11/2011 15:10

GOVE swill say what Cameron and Clegg tell him to say. They are bigger millionaires than him And have more Topry cabinet clout.

fickencharmer · 28/11/2011 15:11

And I dont like his shiny suits either.

SardineQueen · 28/11/2011 15:13

So it has now been officially announced by the government that childcare in the UK is expensive? Great! I look forward to seeing their forthcoming policies about making it more affordable.

SardineQueen · 28/11/2011 15:14

Flyingstart Ouch I hope you are OK Sad

FantasticVoyage · 28/11/2011 15:15

GOVE swill say what Cameron and Clegg tell him to say.

More accurately, Gove will say whatever the Murdochs will tell him to say.

Run down the teaching profession and replace them with interactive material supplied by Harper Collins? And why not?
