Hello, I live in an intentinal community and am wondering if anyone else does or did ?
Ours is a community for the education and welfare of it's members, of which there are about 9 families (plus a few floating extras) living in an collection of houses and a main maor house in a rural hamlet - anyone else in a similar position ?

You haven't answered the questions about the mathematic and scientific work OP.

LeBOF · 27/11/2011 18:36

Crystal meth Grin

RitaMorgan · 27/11/2011 18:38

Where has this idea come from that everybody in the OP's place is shagging around? Grin

RosemaryandThyme · 27/11/2011 18:39

Well yes I don't do any of the research myself, the men have weekly meetings where they work on topics of interest which they then write articles about and attempt to get others interested in with a view to funding research, so far it doesn't seem to have really taken off, they potter about enthusiatically but I've always thought that the bulk of the money to run the estate comes from normal earned income - as for actual topics they are working on I only pick-up snippets.

Not shagging. More like working it out with a pencil.

alexpolismum · 27/11/2011 18:41

how many children are in your community, if you don't mind me asking?

What sort of ages are they?

Do they generally seem happy with the situation?

LeBOF · 27/11/2011 18:42

What's in it for women, OP?

Esta3GG · 27/11/2011 18:42

the men have weekly meetings where they work on topics of interest

And what do the women do? Sit around tittering behind their fans?

Very sad to hear that most people view community life as terrible for children - particulalry those that have lived in communities, perhaps I'm more just hoping that my children will look back on a lovely childhood.

LineRunnerSaturnalia · 27/11/2011 18:44

Do they (the men) actually write grant applications to scientific funding bodies?

JamieComeHome · 27/11/2011 18:44

R&T - I remember you. I recall the last thread I read of your that you were feeling rather stressed by the whole thing.

JamieComeHome · 27/11/2011 18:45

thread of yours

LeBOF · 27/11/2011 18:45

Maybe, linerunner- but I'm guessing the women type them up and lick the stamps.

I could not live like that.

Here, we all take an active and equal part in running the co-op and deciding what gets done.

No fucking way would I live somewhere where 'the men' had meetings to which I was not party, that decided the direction and purpose of my community.

Mandy2003 · 27/11/2011 18:47

Did the fact that it's the men that meet and "talk about scientific stuff" just evolve? Were women interested but discouraged from joining in. Or did they have more sense

I'm definitely getting an Amish vibe here!

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 27/11/2011 18:49

what areas of mathematics?

LineRunnerSaturnalia · 27/11/2011 18:51

I love the idea of a co-op, but not what ypu're describing, OP, I'm afraid. It just all sounds rather inverted and deceptive.

JamieComeHome · 27/11/2011 18:52

I 6hate^ the idea of a community. I am too antisocial. Other people piss me off too much

dearprudence · 27/11/2011 18:53

So the purpose of the community is to pursue educational and scientific values and you don't even know the scientific topics the 'adult males' are working on.

exoticfruits · 27/11/2011 18:56

I don't think it is good for the DCs, unless they get out to school and mix with people in the 'real' community.

RosemaryandThyme · 27/11/2011 18:57

The scince side was one of the founding ideals - to get together people (no idea why it started as just men, just who knew who I think) who had similar ideas to explore but not the funds to do so themselves, maths grew in importance once children started to grow-up as it was seem and is seen as a precursor to developing a logical mind.
And golly yes it does get difficult here sometimes.

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 27/11/2011 18:58

Hmm Are any of them actually mathematicians or scientists? I mean, do any of them have academic qualifications that would give them a sufficient foundation of knowledge for research?

Or is it a bit like "wow - you know what, I think the universe must be 13-dimensional and vibrating in harmony with the dolphins.... "

Proudnscary · 27/11/2011 19:00

I can't think of anything worse than living in a community. The very thought of it makes me feel itchy and suffocated.

I'm very concerned that you seem to know fuck all about how your community is sustained and what people actually do?? As for the 'men's meetings'.Is this for real?????
