to be fed up with correcting teacher's spelling mistakes

No doubt I will now write a post riddled with spelling mistakes, but I'm not teaching small children in my defence.

I accept, no-one can spell everything, and I would not be surprised if a teacher had to look up stationary/stationery for instance. But I'm really fed up with ones that I would expect children to be able to spell turning up in homework/letters/displays. And I feel compelled to correct them.

Recently we've had Antartica, in huge coloured letters on a display. Got me a very grumpy response since he then felt he had to change it. We've had a work sheet home with Autum on. My son asked for barbecue/barbeque in his spelling book (not sure how to spell it myself) but I think the teacher writing bar-b-q is a bit out of order. And the latest one is the teacher correcting squirl to skwirel on homework. I wrote on it in red 'teacher please correct correctly', possibly a bit snotty of me but I'm getting fed up of it.

Do other people get this? And do they get annoyed? Or AIBU?

my cronies and I would supply the subject for the verb 'would have' ; the word 'myself' has no correct grammatical place in your sentence.

I would also recommend that you check out the rules on split infinitives eg 'to use a comma properly' ... just a thought, to help your literary 'career'.

Oh, I did not realise that "pétard" comes from the Middle French peter meaning 'to break wind' (wiki
That is my 'word of the day' Wink

LeQueen! Love!!

Why not go up to your lovely airing cupboard and stroke those beautifully-arranged towels?

clam · 29/11/2011 19:05

Actually, someone did tell me once how to do acute accents. But I can't remember.

bemybebe · 29/11/2011 19:08

in control panel switch "keyboard" to french? or is there an easier way?

clam · 29/11/2011 19:27

No, it involved pressing one of the keys...

Erm, I don't wish to be difficult, but what are they? Don't look like bastardy-bollocky accents to me, Just squiggles. Or should that be skwiggels?

clam · 29/11/2011 19:59

Ha! Just went to "help and support" and asked about accents. You need to go to something called "character map."

sparklythings · 29/11/2011 20:01

Squirl being corrected to skwerel? As in squirrel? Seriously? By a teacher?! I find that really hard to believe to be honest.
If true though YDANBU and I'd be wanting my child taught by a more competent teacher.

Ω

Look what I did on my keyboard! Was trying to put the accent above the letter and got an omega symbol instead. Very useful.

Popbiscuit · 29/11/2011 21:29

Oh no! That's not an omega symbol! What happened? It was there, I swear!

TartyMcFarty · 29/11/2011 21:49

I really haven't read beyond the second page, but I should just point out that we have a policy of not correcting al spelling / grammar mistakes (in some books we'd be crossing out every other word!) Personally I highlight three or four per piece, correct them in the margin, and expect them to be revised.

It does, however, annoy me that some teachers can't spell!

munkeychops · 29/11/2011 21:51

I have several teachers on my facebook, and whilst I realise that they aren't teaching when writing on there and have no requirement to spell correctly, I find some of the spelling mistakes quite scary.

... One of them uses 'there' and 'their' incorrectly pretty much every time they use the words.

TartyMcFarty · 29/11/2011 21:53

all spelling / grammar mistakes
