I went to one this morning. Crammed, as they always are, with twee crap that no-one could possibly need.

My fault for going, I know. But never again.

Did you say that last time too? Grin

grovel · 26/11/2011 15:31

Yes, Pombear, I did. UUUUUUrgh!

We went to one in Bakewell last weekend, twas crap, £4 for a small jar of chutney and scarves that only 80 year old grannies would like.

ElderberrySyrup · 26/11/2011 15:38

were there no wood-turners with lovely applewood bowls? Most of the craft fairs I go to are crap except for the woodturners.

The fucking wood-turners were there in force. And the makers of rubbish jewellery. And enough sodding bird tables to fill every garden on the planet.

What about the patchwork, made from vile fabrics with no taste whatsoever but considerable technical skill?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 26/11/2011 15:46

I clicked on the link of someone on here who is doing one today. Her stuff is very good.
Today there was a Christmas market in our town. One of the stalls was wood work. Me and DD were wondering out loud who buys £85 owls made of wood? Someone had because there was a sold sign on one.
Twas horrid.
There was also the jam and pickle stalls and, I think, 7 or 8 cupcake sellers.

grovel · 26/11/2011 15:52

Oh yes, the quilty types were there with their beatific smiles.

Quilts were either dowdy or incorporated such vile fabrics that even the Beckhams wouldn't take their wallets out.

Yabu! I have been to two and bought loads of nice twee things.....I got a gorgeous hand knitted neck thing....in a lovely green...it's like a legwarmer for your neck..Blush not sure what they're really called. Also got beautiful hand made angel for tree....1 pound and looks like it costs....20.

NotaTeacherBasher · 26/11/2011 16:01

I always feel uncomfortable at craft fairs because the stall holders look so hopeful when you pause at their stalls Sad

Red2011 · 26/11/2011 16:01

feeling inept and unwanted now as is due to do a craft fair next month with home-made jewellery, cards and decorations

Clawdy · 26/11/2011 16:03

Can't resist 'em! always come back with lovely things I will never use

SoupDragon · 26/11/2011 16:03

"it's like a legwarmer for your neck."

Isn't it a cowl or the poncetastically named Infinity Scarf (which I think my be longer)

BleurghUna · 26/11/2011 16:08

I like the idea of craft fairs, I just hate the stuff they sell, most of it's ugly but you feel you should admire it because it's hand made. Such a lot of time, energy and skill goes into making that tasteless crap!

grovel · 26/11/2011 16:09

Exactly, BleurgUna (great name).

YABU, go earlier!
I love craft fairs! I go one in Brighton every few weeks and go in five minutes before it offically opens. It's empty and I get a good pick before the good stuff is gone! Grin Go two horus later however and it's chocka with everything good gone so I do get where you're coming from!

grovel · 26/11/2011 16:17

No, confusedpixie, I'm not buying that. People who can try to sell the dross I was looking at today are quite incapable of making anything tasteful, affordable or remotely useful.

Unless you happen to like purple knitted tea cosies for £30.

alemci · 26/11/2011 16:20

some are better than others I think. I think some of the things are a bit pricey though.

tiddlerslate · 26/11/2011 16:32

I always go to ones like We Make in London where the stallholders have more modern useful stuff. Got some gorgeous coasters there for SIL last year and she loved them and she is a nightmare to buy for.

timidviper · 26/11/2011 16:39

I've just been to to one today that had the most amateur birthday cards I've ever seen. The sort of standard that you'd give constructive suggestions on if your children made them!

grovel · 26/11/2011 17:04

timid, I bet they cost a fortune as well.

Daft.

OP posts:
ElderberrySyrup · 26/11/2011 17:06

Another thing you always get at craft fairs: black and white landscape photography that is perfectly ok and you would be quite pleased if you took a picture as pretty as that, but is not worth the £40 mounted but unframed that they're trying to charge.

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 26/11/2011 17:07

Urgh i hate them and those bloody cupcake makers who seem to get everywhere! Fuck off already with your crap sponge and sickly icing put in a jaunty paper wrapper with some sparkly shit on top that inevitibly turns into literal sparkly shit.

grovel · 26/11/2011 17:12

Oi, NearlyMrsC, this is my rant and you've outshone me. Get a grip, woman.
