Why would you? Just why?

My DM and MIL both iron absolutely everything including pants, tea towels and dusters. DM hates ironig so god knows why she does everything, MIL looks forward to "Ironing Day" Hmm
The only thing I ever iron is DP's work shirts and trousers and sometimes my jeans if they come out of the dryer a bit to crinkled.
However I do have a "Sock Dating Agency" in a carrier bag at the bottom of the wardrobe, where single socks will hopefully one day meet their other half but long term singles get used as dusters and eventually thrown out. DP thinks this is I'm weird, but I like to think I the Cilla Black of the sock world (I am a red head, if a little odd).

IslaValargeone · 25/11/2011 17:12

:o

Arion · 25/11/2011 17:13

I expected at least one comment about someone "panting" whilst ironing their sheets! Grin

Obviously I'm the only child here today Hmm

MsBrian · 25/11/2011 17:14

Guys it's Friday night for goodness sake we should be talking about bumsex not ironing sheets!

Who on earth irons sheets anyway....

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 25/11/2011 17:15

My MIL does. And socks.

smilehomebirth · 25/11/2011 17:23

I don't iron anything.
I know someone who irons pants because they're paranoid about threadworms... The eggs shouldn't make it through the wash if the machine isn't too fully loaded though, so I'm not sure I get it!

thisisyesterday · 25/11/2011 17:25

why wouldn't you?

ok, i don't iron pants. but i do iron sheets! i can't stand wrinkly sheets on a freshly made bed. nice crisp ironed cotton sheets... lovely!

Crabapple99 · 25/11/2011 17:25

ironing sheets! Don't get me started on bed bugs again, I wrote reams on the last thread about ironing sheets.

Iron them.

Bedbugs cause a year of disruption and cost thousands.

Ragwort · 25/11/2011 17:27

Yes, I iron sheets and tea towels (but not pants Grin).

I don't mind ironing and it only takes about 30 mins a week (family of 3), but I am always shocked at people who vacuum every day. Shock

Pascha · 25/11/2011 17:29

God I don't vacuum every day. I leave that for DH unless its really skanky.

wisebird · 25/11/2011 22:58

I rarely wash the bath towels but the bedsheets are definitely ironed!! Unless you buy those horrid, nasty, sweaty polycotton ones, how can you NOT iron them? Confused Obviously YWBVU to iron them yourself - you need to have an ironing lady (or, even better, an ironing man Wink). Who also pairs up socks in the laundry cupboard. And have an annual sock amnesty where you let all the poor single socks go, even if one of them is your absolute favourite.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 25/11/2011 23:30

I iron our childrens bedding. No real logic to it other than when they're asleep it looks better if their head is on an ironed pillow case and their quilt looks neat! Blush

I think I'd have to refill our iron at least 784563 times to iron our bedding - my iron is CRAP!

rhondajean · 25/11/2011 23:33

Erm surely everyone irons dusters and teatowels (not the terry type) but stretchy bottom sheets and knickers are unnecessary? And duvets and pillowscases are a must iron - despite DHs attempts to sneak them past the ironing pile.

Or am I really living on my own planet??

LidlVoice · 25/11/2011 23:34

I have a friend who irons everything. She's nuts. She also hoovers everywhere every day, so that she can see the hoover lines in her carpets Shock

HopefullyDH · 25/11/2011 23:43

My father always ironed the sheets (not pants though) and he has passed this idea onto me (though my DW thinks this is crazy). At the moment we have a cleaner who comes in once a week to iron and she does the sheets (and I will sheepishly admit the teatowels). So it's not only the previous generation :$

ujjayi · 25/11/2011 23:49

I iron all bedding including sheets. Cannot abide sleeping on crumpled bedlinen - it just feels skanky to me. I also iron tea towels. I do not iron pants though.....except for DH's boxer shorts as I think they must be terribly uncomfortable all scrunched up.

MummyNic · 25/11/2011 23:55

My MIL irons sheets, she's lovely. But she does look slightly miffed that I don't Hmm
I was very keen to iron when I was about 8, my mum let me do the pants and socks, took ages!!! I soon stoppedWink

Now I try to buy non iron clothes for me but I iron all the clothes religiously so that my family look smart... But that's about it!! I clean the bathroom etc but only dust when Corrie is foggy Blush

I have a "missing it's partner" sock area... I had a real sort through and have paired up all but about 5!!! Wahoooo!!!Confused

Shit, I need to get out moreGrin

tunnelmaniac · 25/11/2011 23:57

Lol at thought of someone ironing sheets with their tongue hanging out - I often iron sheets and yawn, is that nearly the same?

spamm · 26/11/2011 00:00

I iron sheets and boxer shorts, but definitely not pants or socks. Part of the issue is that my DP does most of the washing and drying, but does not fold things when they come out of the dryer. If I get to them fast enough, then it is not an issue, but most of the time, I have to get all the creases out of them.

I love nicely crisp clean sheets. On our bed, I put them on straight out of the tumble dryer - no ironing then. But if they have sat around for a while, then I do iron them.

merrymonsters · 26/11/2011 00:52

One of DH's aunts irons her pants because some doctor told her to for 'problems down there'. I guess the theory is that it kills germs or something.
Anyway, that's why she does it.

mrsjay · 26/11/2011 00:58

My mum would and does Shock its madness why would you iron pants ??

Rollergirl1 · 26/11/2011 01:14

I very much doubt ironing kills germs. It just heats them up!

I think ironing is utterly pointless. What do we iron for? We iron cos everyone else does so we feel we should. I think everyone should stop ironing.

Its not even a nice word to write for gods sake. It just looks wrong.

workshy · 26/11/2011 01:23

my mum irons everything -'because it looks nice in the drawer'

and yes that does include sheets, pantsm socks, tea towels, dusters -and the dish cloth!!!!

personally -I iron nothing!

cantspel · 26/11/2011 01:34

IslaValargeone I have one of those big steam press things and love it but i still dont iron sheets. I have fitted sheets and find when they are stretched over the matress it pulls out the creases.

I do iron shirts. I have 2 teenage sons and a husband so they generate 20 plus shirts a week that need ironing. I mainly wear jeans and sweatshirst so dont bother ironing those.

DioneTheDiabolist · 26/11/2011 02:08

When I was 17 my then boyfriend(21) told me that his mother ironed his pants. He said it like it was a good thing. I knew then that we didn't have a future. I was right.
