To think cheap cava could be making me feel ill?

I usually drink sainsburys own brut cava (around £4.50 a bottle), I have a large glass while cooking dinner but always feel a bit ropey the next day which is starnge as it's only a glass... I didn't drin kall last week and felt fine, do you think it could be because it's cheap?

Don't think it's because it's cheap, that particular brand may not agree with you. I get a bit of a head on me after drinking petit chablis.

How LARGE is the glass? Grin

BoobleBeep · 25/11/2011 11:24

A pint or so.... Grin... Only joking, just an average large glass, have done some browsing and it could be down to sulphites in wine. Wfeel a bit dodgy popping into Sainsburys after the school run to buy a litre of vodka though.. Grin

Buy a gift bag as well as the litre of vodka - no longer looks a dodgy purchase after the school run Grin

fuzzynavel · 25/11/2011 11:37

I've banned myself from the vodka isle it's far too more-ish and as I used to drink it with diet coke, it practically gave me wings!

What about a lovely G&T? Far more "socially" acceptable to cart out a few litres of that. Smile

fuzzynavel · 25/11/2011 11:38

Newmummy, what a bloody good idea Wine

Whatmeworry · 25/11/2011 11:40

Buy better Cava :)

tooearlymustdache · 25/11/2011 11:42

do you open the bottle then use it daily?

it might be oxidising and then going 'off'

*disclaimer, am not a scientist, honest

Newmummytobe79 · 25/11/2011 11:46

see you down the vodka aisle later on fuzzynavel! Wine

Can I suggest you throw a cheap birthday card in the basket too if purchasing on a Monday Grin

fuzzynavel · 25/11/2011 11:52

You're very naughty Newmummy but I like you Grin

BoobleBeep · 25/11/2011 12:28

I usually open it and drink it over two days, the rest I pour away as it goes flat.

Not sure if spending more will make a difference if it's the sulphites?

mwahahaha (evil grin) fuzzynavel!

I'm back from my shopping trip with a lovely pointless pink bottle bag to put with my collection in the cupboard!

Think I'll be buying everyone mulled wine for Christmas to get rid of the damned things Grin

IslaValargeone · 25/11/2011 16:17

Some people do have specific wine intolerances, I s* through the eye of a needle if so much as a drop of chardonnay passes my lips.

lazarusb · 25/11/2011 16:23

The thing about vodka is it looks like water...so nobody has to know Wink
My aunt once gave me cheap, fizzy white wine (I can't believe she paid anywhere NEAR £4.50 a bottle for it!) and it really upset my stomach.

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 25/11/2011 16:24

Are you being unreasonable about what?

candytuft63 · 25/11/2011 16:26

Its the sulphites that make me ill - red wine especially. I make my own, now. Lovely, cheap and very morish. However, drank gallons of frostyjack cider in student days with nary a burp. Never, ever have i had any wine left in the bottle to drink the next day. I think it evaporates...Grin

mrsjay · 25/11/2011 17:08

any cava or fizzy wine gives me a headache I tend to stick to flat wine and vodka not together cos that is lethal i would change your wine ,

BoobleBeep · 25/11/2011 17:56

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe- Is it (am I) unreasonable to assume it's the wine

Had a glass of smirnoff with soda & lime cordial and realised I don't like it anymore! Haven't had it for a few years (used to love it) and now I just find it way too sweet, like drinking lemonade. Have just been back to sainsbo's a got a bottle or red organic wine so we'll see how it goes, bottoms up Wine !

Sulphites occur in pretty well all wines - had a long conversation with a wine expert on this onCe and fell asleep at the detail he went into but I gather it's a natural occurrence, not an additive if you know what I mean. I would think that if you are drinking while preparing the dinner you are drinking on an empty stomach and this is the more likely reason for feeling ropey.Or maybe the cava is too cheap, try going up a quid or two and see what happens. Use the rest of the bottle for cooking instead of throwing it out. A glass does wonders for a risotto. Grin

BarkisIsWillin · 25/11/2011 20:08

By the way love the suggestion of putting a gift bag/birthday card in same basket as bottle!!

fuzzynavel · 25/11/2011 21:52

You WILL be back mummytobe, get rid of a few and save loads!

When's the happy ocassion?

Shall i come with something in a glittery gift bag with a little card attached Grin

tunnelmaniac · 26/11/2011 00:35

think you're just not drinking enough of it :)), 2 glasses at least - and get some decent red...
