to be raging at being accused of thievery by Tesco?

Rushed round Tesco yesterday after school as DD was not feeling well and I had left her sitting in the car. Found a self service till empty and quickly scanned my items. Made the payment by debit card and stood waiting for my receipt to come out of the till.

It did'nt, then the till screen went blank. So I called over a till assistant and said I needed a receipt. She checked her computer and said that the payment could not have gone through as it was not showing on her machine. I insisted that the payment on the chip and pin went through fine but she would not have it. She called over the checkout manager who went out to the back office to check the 'mainframe' computer.

I was stood there at the tills for over 20 minutes at this point. Whilst waiting for the checkout manager to come back, I said to the till supervisor that I needed to get going because my DD was in the car and could they please leave my receipt at customer services and I would pick it up later. She puts a hand on my trolley to prevent me from leaving with it (cue blood boiling) and says that I would have to wait!

Anyway the checkout manager comes back and says that I could not have put the items through the till as it is not showing Hmm and I would have to put them through again and pay for them this time Shock.

I was rather irate at this point and dumped the trolley there and walked out. I get home and ring my bank and yes, the amount of money has been taken out of my bank but will not show on my statement until Monday. So I came out of Tesco accused of trying to walk out with items I had not put through the till and had not paid for although I have paid for them after all and not got them!

There was a massive queue all listening in to this and I was mortified. I have shopped there for over 6 years week in, week out. I am bloody furious. OK there was a problem with their computers which can't be helped but don't treat your bloody customers like scum!

AIBU to go apeshit in there on Monday (when I can print out my bank statement)?

I have previous with Tesco's- wandering around with items on top of pushchair talking to a friend I had bumped into. Totally forgot what I was doing and started heading out the door whilst still talking. Immediately realised ( hardly out of the door) and gasped at my stupidity, turned around and headed straight back in commenting on my woolly head/ not thinking what I was doing etc. Security guard saw me embarrassingly coming back in and accused me of shoplifting. Told me to wait at front of shop by him until manager came. Refused to talk to me when I said "but you saw what I just did, genuine mistake etc.... Got led through the store to managers office at back of stock room, poor baby in push chair thankfully asleep, quizzed over wether I could pay, told I would be banned from store etc etc. Ashamed to say I cried at the awfulness of it all and Thankfully the manager ( aged about 12!) said he would let me go this time. Didn't shop in Tescos for about a year after that and rarely do if I can help it. The staff are mostly useless, queues are massive always, they talk to their customers like dirt so not a great fan here. However I think in your case they were probably just doing the right thing trying to find out wether transaction had gone through. Sorry!

library books can set off the door alarms when you walk into a shop

NewsClippings · 25/11/2011 15:02

Agree with asking to see the CCTV. And when it shows you scanning the goods, complain to Head Office about the checkout manager's rude accusatory tone Angry

MerryMarigold · 25/11/2011 15:06

I think the point is that they and the OP weren't sure if the card had gone through, not whether she scanned the items or not. Even OP wasn't convinced as she left her shopping behind! I'm sure she would have fought harder if she'd known for sure the card details had been processed.

A substantial proportion of losses due to thieving are actually down to members of staff. Yet customers don't go around accusing staff of theft... (at least, not that I've noticed).

Shoplifing is clearly not big nor clever but Tesco can't treat every customer as guilty until proven innocent. If the bosses don't want to deal with the general public, they shouldn't be running a supermarket.

YANBU

This is partly because I've just spent 20 minutes in a q waiting to pay at the local Tescos

mayorquimby · 25/11/2011 16:52

i'm with tesco on this one

alemci · 25/11/2011 17:09

It is a shame they couldn't have put the shopping behind the counter and then you could have gone home and sorted it out with your bank. I think it was irritating that there was no receipt and I can see that you were worried about your daughter.

These things always happen when you are in a rush and preoccupied with other matters. It is sods law.

fickencharmer · 25/11/2011 17:29

SERIOUS when other people hear the accusations. They need to say sorry

gasman · 25/11/2011 17:58

If they aren't prepared to take the hit on the losses from those odious self service tills especially when they go wrong then they need to get rid of them and employ enough staff.

KateMiddIeton · 25/11/2011 18:03

YAbu. If you'd not got your knickers in such a twist, put it through again and taken details of the person to contact in the event it had gone through twice you would have been out of the shop in 5 minutes.

Instead you made a huge scene. How very undignified.

entropygirl · 25/11/2011 19:47

kate ooohh I dont often disagree with you! But there was no way she could have manufactured the breakdown which was tesco's problem and no reason for them to doubt her in having paid. They are a big firm and I think they should suck it up if their software very occasionally borks leaving payment in doubt. It's not like lettering out the shop with her shopping will encourage others to do the same as they wont be able to manufacture a break down.

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 25/11/2011 19:54

entropygirl - I totally agree.

MerryMarigold · 25/11/2011 20:01

No, but people can see a breakdown and say - look, I've bought all this stuff, honest guv.
