My husband has recently had to cut working hours down to a 4 day week so we have less money coming in, I work part time in a local authority and feel really strongly about going out on strike next Wednesday but hubbie has not been supportive and made me feel really guilty about it saying me going on strike won't make any difference and i should go to work rather than loose money AIBU for following my heart about this matter? just on a big guilt trip at the moment.....

Pakdooik · 24/11/2011 14:56

Of course not!

redexpat · 24/11/2011 14:57

No. It's one day ffs.

dreamingbohemian · 24/11/2011 15:01

YANBU

But, are you really really skint? If losing a day's pay means you can't buy groceries, you shouldn't feel guilty about not joining in.

TastesLikePanda · 24/11/2011 15:23

If losing the money is going to affect you that badly, then most unions do have a hardship fund you can apply for.
YANBU - I strongly feel that if you are in a union then you take it seriously and support it through good and bad.

Incidentally I felt very stongly about the industrial action (but the reverse of how you feel) so I chose to leave the union. That was the decision I felt was right for me, so I stuck to it.

YANBU - not if you feel that strongly
Might be 1 day's pay next week but who knows what kind of loss you could face if negotiations don't go well...

olliesmom · 24/11/2011 15:39

Thanks for the responses , it will be a struggle because as well as a days pay i will also have to find the money to pay the contracted childminder i have for my 4 boys so will work out to be an expensive ''day off''...Would definately have to leave the union if i went into work but they have helped me in the past so feel i should support as well as feeling strongly about the issue

It's a tough one.

I am public sector and was wondering what to do. For obvious reasons requests for annual leave on 30 November are being carefully scrutinised.

This morning a surgeon decided that DW needs surgery urgently, like next week, and she will probably be discharged on Wednesday. (Not NHS so it will happen).

That gives me justification to ask for leave.

Am I BU to feel that I have been dealt - at DW's expense, alas - a get-out-of-jail-free card?

TroublesomeEx · 24/11/2011 17:26

If you are a member of a union that is striking, I think you have a duty to strike.

Presumably you would want their support should it be necessary, which is why you joined in the first place.

Whatmeworry · 24/11/2011 17:28

One day plus childcare in a whole year should not be a deal breaker. You will probably need teh Union a lot in the next few years, think of it as a sound future investment as well as sound principles :)
